Just caught something on the news about a recall - - something about steering problems - - anybody know details such

as years could it be uncontrolled steering? Been around for so many years/

I wonder if this effects us with the upgraded 09 steering linkage?

Yes, any truck in that range by some magical formula they have. The tie rods ends were installed incorrectly. Just like all these trucks failure to align the tie rod on the correct plane will snap them.

When my truck was new after a short time I had a looseness in the wheel. After inspection of the steering I found a linkage to the frame that had a bolt that was too small. The frame actually was drilled too small and the installers put one size smaller bolt in it. I drilled it out to match the hole size in the linkage.

I installed th steering upgrade with latest parts from stevewhite 2 months ago.

This version can't be installed wrong under any circumstances.
The Tierod and the Tierodend have a system inside that hold them always aligned correctly together.

Sorry for my English, I'm not native speaker.

Thanks for that bit of info. I didn't realize they had made that kind of modification to them.
Oh and your English is perfect! (Better than most of ours. . )

This is what mine looked like after the L-16 recall.

I suspect it is this: the tie rod stud and ball can rotate in the socket, like going to one end and the other of a slot, so you can turn the connecting link one way and the other vs. centered. If the two ends are installed with their studs at opposite ends of their travel, the linkage cannot turn. Just a guess.

I had the earlier recall and received new parts. With this new one I'm curious if it might include an alignment. I have a slight pull and am due for new tires. Just looking for my first "freebie" :-laf after being back to the dealer 5 times and still have a transmission problem#@$%!.

The picture show the correct installation position. The ones that break have the socket rotated out of line with vertical bolt and usually pointing at the ground, which is where they want to go if they wear too much. Taking the tie rod out of parallel with the plane of the tie rod bolt causes it to bind at full lock. Its not a taper problem, its not a component problem, it is purely mis-installation as there is no tabs to align the planes and keep it there during adjustment.

Your English and spelling are about 10 times better than most Americans that post on forums. I'm 61 and I was taught well proper spelling and sentence structure. Today's schools here in America have gone steadily down the "Tubes". Kids that graduate High School today are lucky just to read.

This is what was on our Indianapolis Fox News last night.
chrysler

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Chrysler announced the recall of roughly 1. 2 million trucks on Friday following a series of accidents related to problems in their steering systems.

Chrysler believes 453,000 vehicles in that group may have portions of their steering systems misaligned, creating a risk that they could stop functioning and cause accidents.

The automaker said it knew of seven accidents and two injuries associated with the problem.

Among the vehicles covered by the recall are roughly 842,400 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks from model years 2003 to 2008. The rest include certain Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups from 2008 to 2012, Ram 1500 4×4 Mega Cabs from 2008, and Ram 4500 and 5500 4×4 chassis cabs from 2008 to 2012.

Chrysler said it would notify the affected truck owners by mail next month with instructions for making free repair appointments.

Not sure how I forgot this. But I broke the driver side tie rod last year and my truck has the 09 linkage.

Luckily it happened in the parking lot and not hammering down the highway. Time to dig into the files for my receipt.

Thank you, the only school i had for english have been a three month crash course in australia, many many years ago. i always try to improve it.

Back to the steering issue.
Thats a little more difficult, when i got the box from stevewhite there was a 10 page installation manual inside with at least 4 pages about how to align the tierodend(s) telling about all the angles who have to be watched on.
And then - take the parts out and found a tierodend with somethinhg, i would say "fork", at the treaded end and a tie rod with a cross bolt that aligns with the "fork", so there is at least 1° of misalignment possible, nothing to mention.
So the whole paperwork is useless rubbish.
Now every hillbilly can install it correctly.

So for me, that recall isn't important.

For those of us that have already changed the parts from Dodge to Moog, are they going to reimburse us the cost? Probably not being Chrysler corp.

Old recall pictures

I think that this is the problem. I posted these pictures a few years ago when this problem first came about, but not much was done about it. And that is why the NHTS is now involved. As stated above. The alignment of the ball in reference to the stud is critical and causes stress on these parts. Causing the ball and stud to break usually in a right turn caused by the articulation pressure of the two. The recall was being done for a few years but it was noted that it should include back to 03 to 09? I think. This recall was not heeded as it should have been.
