Anyone ever heard this? If boost goes up 1psi than h. p. goes up 10 horsepower. So if I have a 160 hp CTD with 13psi and Raise boost to 18psi that will add 50hp??? Anyone concure with this??

defeland i too have heard this is an aproximation of horse power .

@ 1 psi is roughly equal to 10 horse power, some where i heard it , just cant remember where. any one else ?

Depends greatly on the configuration, turbo size, etc. for example, with the HX35, Sickly made about 40 psi at 400 hp using the 18. 5 cm2 housing. Boost would have been much higher with a smaller housing. Recently made 565 with 36 psi with a different turbo, and made 609 with 43 psi with yet another, a HX55.

I read that the rule 1 lb boost=10 hp is most accurate when running the 16 housing. The article said the 16 cm housing was the perfect housing for our engines. I believe it was written by Bruice Mallison from Pittsburg diesel injection

I first read the 1 psi equals 10 hp rule from Smokey Yunick (may he rest in peace). Smokey knows! He was an amazing researcher.

Interestingly enough I met his daughter at PRI (performance/racing industries) trade show in Indianapolis in December. They are selling some great books about his life.

In conversing with some Cummins rep's several years back, they said the exact thing. Every pound of boost produces about 10 HP. So when I first installed a gauge on my 91 1/2, I installed a boost gauge, and sure enough, I had a max of 16 PSI. The engine was rated at 160 HP. My 94 has some upgrades, and I have had it on a dyno that said I was producing about 300 HP... ... . yep, the boost gauge reads 30 PSI max. So I thnk this is a pretty good rule of thumb. BTW, I do have the stock turbo.
