I just got back from a four day driving trip from the bay area to the Canadian border (Eureka, Montana). My truck with it's latest mods treated every grade like it was nothing. Mucho power to spare. I've noticed that the turbo is screaming for more air, especially when passing under full throttle (like when a semi is fast approaching). My filter minder is poping up so much I feel like I've got a Butterball turkey under the hood. Anyway I'm looking for a Mega Cannon for my ram. Any suggestions for a vendor?

No it wasn't the whole kit. I think Pscotty and the mega cannon kits are too much money for what they are really worth. My pscotty is just thin plastic that they charge $150 for. That is a huge ripoff. I heard the afe mega cannon flows the best so I just bought the filter.

Look on ebay....

Lately there have quite a few people selling them on ebay. Alot of different prices coming from various vendors.

But by the time the auction is over the amount is more than you could buy one for somewhere else. (I tried that route!)

The problem is when idiots keep bidding after the reserve is met. They usually clear reserve at about $170 but the doeks keep bidding them up to $210+ like it's the last one they'll ever see on there.

Try PDR.

Least expensive is not always the "cheapest" when you need support, just food for thought. For good prices and SUPERB customer service www.smokindiesel.com or 724-335-6167

Andy or Doug will make ya happy.

Glenn

Usual disclaimer, I'm just a happy customer!

Yep, Andy & Doug are another great source for the Megacannon. I'm eagerly awaiting my appointment to have them "juice up" my truck in January. Great guys who know what they're doing.

Ain't that the truth...

BOY... Have I learned this lesson the hard way. Doug and Andy will take care of you before, during and after the sale. That is what is most important to me. Not saving $20 from some guy on Ebay.

Give Doug or Andy a call... you'll be glad you did. . :)

While I agree that having someone who does a good job before, during and after the fact support is a VERY good idea I dont see needing support for an air filter... ... it gets dirty, you clean it. If you cant figure out how to do that then one probably shouldnt buy it :D

Sorry Rick, I gotta pick on ya here :D

And the disclaimer: We do sell the Scotty Air II here, so you may want to take my comments with a grain of salt. And I also have to come clean: When I opened up the box of the first Scotty I ever purchased, the first words out of my mouth were 'What a piece of junk' :D

And now onto the point. Through extensive tests, both by ourselves and by independents (many of whom are TDR members, and have posted their results here) we can say, with confidence, that any sort of air intake, be it the MegaCannon, Scotty, or Volant will work better than a simple filter laid under the hood of your diesel.

Results vary based on truck, configuration, and outside air temps but the typical EGT reduction from a BHAF or aFe filter laid under the hood will be in that 75F - 125F range at WOT compared to a stock airbox. A simple heat shield will often result in another 25F reduction in EGTs. A heat shield that seals to the hood of the truck is good for an additional 25 -50F reduction in EGTs compared to running an open element. A sealed unit that draws only outside air from the fender area is good for about 150 - 200F reductions below stock air boxes, and units which draw from a cowl location and fender inlets appear to be good for 200 - 350F max EGT reductions (below stock airbox numbers).

Are they worth it? If it were me, and I wasn't a vendor, I would say most definitely (this is where you may want to exercise the grain of salt). The average air system sells for about $200 US, and will deliver approximately 150F - 350F reductions in exhaust gas temperatures. This means you're spending anywhere between 57 cents/degree and a $1. 33/degree of reduction. A typical 4" exhaust system will reduce EGTs by about 75 - 100F, at a recent cost of $299 or $2. 99 - $3. 99/degree of reduction.

An open air element with no protection, and I'll use the aFe as an example as its the one that I'm most familiar with, with run you about $60 US for about 100F of reduction. About 60 cents/degree.

Anyway, I'll quit with the infomercial and return you to your regularly scheduled programming now :D

I musta got hosed...

I bought mine last summer (AFE MEGACANNON). Complete kit (filter, mount, cleaner, 30 years worth of oil, and an outerwear for more than any figures posted here yet.

Thanks for all of your replies. I haven't had web access for a few days due to the stormy weather here (the remnants of a "super typhoon"). Those of you that have AFE's already installed, have you noticed a drop in egt's?

Mike

Kinda...

I didnt really notice a big drop in EGT's, maybe 50-75 deg. or so. (I put the AFE in before I had 4") But, what I did see after the filter install, EGT's dont climb as fast, and they definetly drop a lot quicker. It may seem to spool a little quicker, but that might be imagination.

The sound is the best part. This filter really lets you hear the turbo. However, it is a lot of $ just to hear the turbo. But, you cant put a price on coolness... or can you?

Filtration? Well, I havent ever had my oil analyzed, so I cant comment on that.

There are a lot of good vendors out there, but shop around for the best price. Remember, customer service is important too. IMO

I agree with Rod, ANY after market filter will help performance over stock. I dont think I am getting the full benefit from the AFE due to the fact that I am still running the stock turbo. That is probably the real bottle neck.

just gotta add my "el-cheapo" filter

consist of a 4" black elbow and a Fram CA-8037 or 8038 stuffed upon the end of the elbow. Change it every other oil change (the fuel filter is on the opposite schedule). My oil samples went down after the first change and have held in the low range.

Problem is it just sits on the inner fender where the old box was. No heat shielding, so ... egts - not tooo much diff, a little cooler tho.

The diff between the filters is dia and lgth but they both have a 4" opening that is a TIGHT fit for the elbow (takes some work to get it on).

SOTSU!!

\\BF//

ps: covered the seam on the elbow with rtv (inside and out) for no leaking. Turbo fins have been clean for about the 75+k miles its been on. Filters run from about 14-18$ depending on Wally or local auto parts hse.
