i am looking for a wiring diagram for a 89 dodge cummins and how to test and trouble shoot the system mine works some times others not at all and some times the light wont go out some times the light wont come on till after it starts and drags down alt volts to about 10 while running and need info on operation and testing and availibility if module is bad thanks

No problem, just trying to return all the help I've received, here's the schematics. If you need any more let me know.

I would look at the diagram and locate all the ground points, make sure they're clean, bright & tight.

Here is the 89 model test procedure:

The control module is located on the firewall below the brake booster (I believe) and will have 2 connectors going into it.

My preheat system does some wierd things every now and then. For instance, when the truck has been sitting all night into the next morning, and the outside temp is, say around 50 or so, it won't cycle the heaters. I know it's supposed to be below 59 F for the heaters to cycle, but it takes mine to be below 50 for them to cycle. I have an early 91, by the way. Some times, when it's been sitting for a while and the engine has cooled to the point where the thermisor says "heat em up!" (on a really cold day) then the WTS light will come on for about a second or so, as do the relays. And sometimes, during a "normal" cycle, they won't cycle long enough. I timed out about 5. 5 seconds one time. Is there something funky here? I have replaced my thermistor twice with no change. I've even cleaned all my connections, and it's still sporadic! I just don't want to be stranded one morning when it's -5 outside and I don't have any where to plug in at. It will start, but it takes about 5-10 minutes and is really hard on the engine (I've tried to see if it would start by skipping the preheat once). Sorry this is long, but it's been bugging the crap outta me for the past couple years. Any advice? THanks!

You may want to check the S/N of your control module and compare it to the chart just above your post. There are 2 series of modules and they are programmed different.

cold start operation

Thanks this info helps but are these supposed to do a self test when ignition is turned on for wait to start and water in fuel lights? What resistances should the sensor read at certain temps? Also how do you test water in fuel sensor operation. I at least know my cold start works when disconnected and do these cycle on and off like later models till warmed up? and how long does cold start advance run for more than a few seconds while cranking? been very helpful!!

thanks

I'm not sure about the message center lights; I've never driven an early model truck.

The 89 Manual doesn't list any values for the thermistor. I would guess following the above posted procedure would show a bad thermistor, if it didn't behave as listed. Or just replace it and see if it changes. The WIF can be checked by removing it from the filter and shorting the 2 terminals together, the light should come on.

thanks PAYCHK YOU HAVE WELL POINTED ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION ! i tested my truck at about 35 degress this morning and the light did not come on so I am thinking i have the old design box and would like to find out the differences between later box vs old and possibly swap to later design if i can find one but still have afew unansered ???s i will check the water sensor soon. I have been lookintg for a manual for the dodge 89 w/ cummins and will look a little longer

Paychk look in the gasser V8 section. My 93 manual doesn't list the AIT spec's for a diesel. But I did check mine against the spec's for the 360 CI gasser and mine tested to the same spec's.

I helped JDurham troubleshoot his 90 D350 a couple of years ago. His problem turned out to be the AIT was installed into a water jacket port. Three trips to the dealer under warrenty and they didn't find it eather. LOL

Here is the chart Philip spoke of, it is from the 93 model 5. 2/5. 9 GASSER trucks, so don't take it as gospel. Though the penny pinchers were in power along time ago (just look at the torque converters same one for the Cummins & V-10  ) so I wouldn't doubt that the sensors are the same.

FSM are worth their weight in gold IMHO the 89 manual is in 2 parts the 89 pickup model + the 89 Diesel supplement. I bought my new from TechAuthority, 6 months ago, just check the electrical section closely as some of the pages were smeared illegible

Ok now to muddy the waters some, the 89 5. 2/5. 9 GASSERs have a chart with different values. Back then they didn't use AIT sensor they used a throttle body temp sensor, anyway here is the chart for them.

Sorry to bother you
