I had my oil changed last month by the dealer at ~46. 5k miles. Usually do it myself, but the situation did not allow. Last week the oil change required message showed up at 48. 2k miles. I figured that maybe the dealer caused an issue, so I changed the oil and filter and reset the message. 30 miles later, the message came back on!! I have reset the mesage 6 times now. I have done it in the past without problem. Now the message may stay off for 1-2 starts of the truck, but keeps coming back. I thought that maybe it was related to hitting 48k miles, but I do not see any maintenance that I could be needing. Plus this is the oil change message, not a perform service message. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have an 08 5500 that we drive a lot... mostly highway miles... we've stretched the change interval to 7500 miles and haven't seen the "oil change required" statement... I often wonder if we just don't meet the mathematical formula in the computer based on the items the computer samples... so we don't see the light.....

Just my thoughts...

I don't think our C&C trucks have the service required function. I change mine every 10k and usually forget to reset the counter. I think all the counter does is record a service performed in the ECM for dealer techs to download in case of a warranty issue.

Mine has 80k troublefree miles. I don't expect any need to visit a Dodge dealer unless a software upgrade is issued.

I usually do my oil changes myself as well but recently I got a coupon for $36 oil change. . what a deal. . its like getting the filter for free verses the cost of the parts if I did it. .

The oil light on mine came around 2000 miles when I did a lot of slow and go street driving. . I now do more freeway driving and the oil light never came on up to 7000 miles when I did the oil change. I also have towed a couple times.

Eric,

I'm glad you posted that useful bit of information. Some of us have been saying for years that we believed the ISB6. 7 trucks with problems are directly related to drive cycle. Those who complain of CELs and dealer visits to clean or replace EGRs or turbochargers usually won't admit that their trucks are used for short trip stop and go city driving.

Your experience offers proof that the trucks that are highway driven and do some heavy towing don't set CELs or require such frequent oil changes.

I appreciate the discussion about C&C trucks not having the oil change message or the drive cycle of the truck, but does anyone have any suggestion as to why the oil change message will not reset?

Can you hook up a code reader and see if there are any codes getting logged.
If I remember correctly some of the factors for the oil change light coming on are:
Mileage
Engine overheat
Oil dilution from diesel, maybe you have too many DPF cleanings going on ?
There's probably a few more.

So basically behind the scenes the ECM is calculating something is wrong even though your are not seeing (yet) an issue.

I saw the service required message once on my 08 C&C right near the end of a long heavy climb up Genesee Pass on I70. The trailer was heavy, the motor was hotter than I'd ever seen it but still within safety specs. I do my oil changes every 7000 miles and I never reset the computer and never see any oil change messages. Truck has 97000 on it today.

Update on issue: After a few days of the oil change message, the Check Gauges and ETC (lightning bolt) lights came on. I checked for a code and the truck displayed a P063D. After checking TDR, I followed the instructions to clean the battery terminals. They were pretty corroded. After cleaning the battery terminals and resetting the oil change message, everything has been back to normal. So far so good! Will see how it goes.

More sophistication means increased chances for minor electrical issues to cause grief. Every year these vehicles become more sophisticated offering more handy features which is great. However, we're giving up simplicity, easy diagnosis, and easy repair as well as some reliability.
