Just curious to know if you use brand x diesel, does your engine produce more black smoke? I put in some diesel and a bottle of Redline 85 at Phillips and I'm getting a lot of black smoke at take off. I know there were posts about Phillips diesel not getting as good mileage.

Thanks in advance,
Charles

I can't tell much difference between diesel brands and smoke. I'm at 5,000 ft running DDIIIa's so theres some visible when starting out till the boost comes up.

As far as mileage, Philips 66 Premium has been the best so far. Ran 3 tanks from a Chevron that had opened up and mileage dropped about 1mpg in town. Same results running Love's. Flying J is way across town and have never run their fuels other than when out of state.

DeezelDoug,

This is the first time for me to use Redline 85. It may be blowing out the carbon. Good thinking... . Any chance the extra smoke is going to clog up the catalytic convertor?

Thanks,
Charles

Depends on who's catalitic converter you plan to hook it up to. #ad
The 24 valve engine does not have a cat. What some muffler shops will tell you is a cat is really a resonator ahead of the muffler.

Ancient Wood,

Thanks for the info. I had no idea that thing was a resonator. I wonder how loud my truck would be if I took off the muffler? Does the resonator drastically reduce the amount of "noise" produced?

Hmmm... I get BETTER mileage on Phillips fuel.

Texaco runs rough and smokes.

Do you think that the Redline 85 is blowing out your accumulated carbon?

I get better mileage on Phillips 66 fuel, too. However, my baby will blow a black smoke ring when I shift under load before the turbo spools up.

Alan,

That is exactly what I'm getting. I get a small puff of smoke each time I shift if I'm a little heavy on the throttle. I guess this is normal using Phillips fuel. .

Thanks for the reply.

Taking the resonator off and keeping a stright-thru muffler only makes it slightly louder. Straight-pipe is LOUD!
