I've noticed this since I got the truck. Even completely stock, if I drive 'easy' for awhile, no full throttle or heavy throttle, & then really get on it, it smokes like crazy. If I drive it 'heavier' more often, then really get on it, it doesn't smoke as bad.

Anyone else notice this?

Yep,

Mine does this too. I think that it has to do with cylinder temperature. If you aren't working it, the temperature drops in the cylinders and it doesn't burn the fuel as well when you nail it. After the cylinder temps come up it won't smoke as much.

Makes sense Steve. I wonder if we're building up 'deposits' in the combustion chamber & on the injectors

Now this is hard to do, but if I go 1/2 a tank & never nail it, it'll smoke big time on the 1st full throttle run. Last time it was putting a Quattro & another Cummins in their place. :D It was really bad back there.

Yeah but somebody has got to do it:cool:

B. O. M. B. creed "Drive em like you stole em" keeps your cyl temps up & we don't ever want to hear about carbon buildups on this

board again. So whats a few clutches or trannys anything better then getting soot .

My recommendation

I think I know what the problem is, you need to ensure that you get the temps up above 1000(pre) once a day..... lol. I looked back on your sig and I see that this should be no problem, When I get my DTT stuff in can I get one of those bad mother shut yo' mouth plates in my truck!:D :D

This practice is often referred to as: "The Italian Tuneup"

The derivation of the phrase is not fully understood. It could be in reference to Italian high-performance cars needing to be driven 'spritedly' to eliminate the previously aforementioned nasty deposits... .

Funny thing... Ever since I installed a fuel plate and Piers Gov spring kit, everytime I put my foot to the floor, I get this nasty black smoke out the pipe. I keep putting my foot to the floor trying to get rid of it, but it never seems to go away. Oh well, tomorrow is a new day, and I will floor it again to see if things get better :D :D

mine is getting to the point where it smokes just cruising now, he he he, but yes we get the thick rich heavier than normal smoke on first hammer down runs

help need 40 so smokes worse... ... ...

seriously forrest why is the auto plate better than the 10? is it the midrange power????????

Bill Cosby once had a good sketch about how to clear out his AC Cobra. Goes something like this: He bumps into Carroll Shelby in the grocery store and complains that his Cobra is running a little rough. Shelby replies "you gotta take it out and run it hard to get the Gunk out. Just take it to 120mph in second gear". Cosby goes "where am I gonna find a spot to do that?" Shelby says "Any side street".

Think it'll work with our Rams? I know for sure I'm gonna need some more gear to pull 120 in 2nd...

Steve

120mph in 2nd gear with a diesel would require an overdrive gear ratio in your differential(s)..... :D

Mine hardly ever smokes (black)... . but that will soon change. *evil grin* :D

I can answer that. The #4 plate is a hotter plate than the #10. It delivers more fuel at all rpm's. Just watch the exhaust temperature. Check out the TST website. Somewhere it talks about the different plates and what they do for power. They don't recommend the #4 plate in a 215 pump but I imagine if you watch the pyrometer you will be ok. The #4 plate in my pump will pin the pyrometer in about 2 seconds if I floor it. Thats 700 degrees to 1500+ in 2 seconds. And you can't see anything behind you either...

Holy cow

2 seconds?????? WOW I thought with the way I had my plate and with the 3k springs it went up real fast but nothing like that, I was forced to slide the plate back a bit to control it. I will get the 4" installed next week and see what that helps. What is the #4 in our motors rated for power wise?

I'm not sure what they are rated at. I have an off the wall engine in my truck that was originally manufactured by cummins to be a stationary generator according to the guy at cummins. He looked up the info from my engine code. He said that I probably got that because I had one of the last 12V engines built for the Dodges. I bought a #4 plate because it was the hottest plate for the type engine that I have and I am looking for power. At the time I got it, I thought that I had the smaller 180HP pump which came with the CA 5spds but now after talking to folks at Tulare and Cummins and on the forum I believe that I have a pump similar to the 215. It is a strong running truck. I've had nitrous assisted GTO's, Trans Ams with full race engine preps and nitrous and an old 69 Ford with a Shelby transplant and I'll tell you what, this truck may not quite run with them but it is very close and it's also carrying around a lot of extra weight. The power really is outstanding from a inline 6.

Steve

soooooo db where are you at?????

damn we need a 12v get together in ca now that would be down right dangerous, he he he
