Hello, all. I have a concern about some sound from the G56 in this truck. It seems atypical from my experience with other trucks, but this is my first manual of this model. And it's possible that the new trucks are so quiet I'm hearing things I never could before.

So, to the point- at 70 mph or around 2k rpm in 6th, it has what sounds like a rattle or low frequency whine emanating from the shifter. It's noticible to both me and my passengers. Comes on at any load condition at the same speed. I can stop it by holding the shifter slightly to the right. As soon as I let it return to the normal position, the noise returns.

In fifth gear, it has a bit of higher pitch whine at 30-40 mph. Same thing I can stop the sound moving the shifter to the right a bit.

This truck has 9k on it now. The 6th gear noise was obvious from day one. I hoped it would go away with break-in but it ain't happening. Just did a cross country trip towing a trailer through the mountains with no change.

What it FEELS like to me is the shifter forks are under pressure in 5 and 6, as if the spring that centers the shifter is side loading the forks in the engaged position.

I'm hoping for some feedback on whether I should turn up the radio, or worry. Planning some mods for this truck, but I want to clear up any warranty concerns first.

Thanks for your time.

I have a friend at Beaumont with the same exact noise. The truck has 65,000 on it and it's done it since new as well. I wonder if the detents in the shift rail cold be off or the shifter a little wacked.

The only noise mine makes is the occasionally going into third gear.
Occasionally, it will slip right into third as if the synchro's were lined up, but it grinds real bad. I'm not speed shifting, it just slides right past the synchro's.
It's also difficult to take out of reverse when cold, but the dealer can't seem to duplicate that one.

Exactly my symptoms. From new I've had to delay the 2-3 shift a dab,and getting out of reverse when cold can be a tug.

the g56 design causes engine noises to be transmitted to the shifter, they used a pp design dual mass flywheel to minimise the noise. it will fail, most fail before 75,000 miles best just to replace with a southbend conofe kit now. the sb has a one piece flywheel and makes the noise louder but that is normal. the g56 needs one quart over full to cool and lube the front bearing. use penzoil syncromesh.

I guess I like the noise cause I don't notice anything unusual. My transmission speed shifts really well. I learned on a 10 speed Roadranger so that helped. Almost 86K on mine.

Never noticed this noise on my old truck, a 2007. 5 with a G56. Current ride has an auto. Shifted like a car and was a blast to drive. New truck's great, but I still miss the old one!!

Mine makes the same noise around 70, about 2200 RPM on this truck; doesn't make noise when driving slower. It also quits when I push the shifter to the right a bit. Still makes the noise whether the clutch is engaged or not.

I took a several hundred mile trip this weekend and noticed it for the first time, truck was lightly loaded.

Took a 1500 mile trip with about 1k on the odo to start with, moderate load in the bed and towing lightly, and didn't notice the noise.

Have about 4k miles on the truck now.

Exactly the same symptoms with mine. Except, I have a harder time getting mine in to reverse when cold than back out. I'm not the smallest person on earth and I found it next to impossible when the truck was new. It's getting a little looser now that I've passed the 50K mark. I sure miss the NV trans in my former '01.
