Dog vs. Skunk

My friends dog was following me to the mail box, out comes a skunk, I retreat (to get the . 22) the dog lunges forward, attackes the skunk, they roll around and the skunk manages to turn around. From the stink of it the dog lost :-laf

Bad part is the dog has no tags, shots or anything, if the skunk got a bite in what is the chance of rabies? It's a nice dog too :{

I'll be gone for the weekend but if anyone knows the answer or odds let me know.

Bathe the dog in Massengil douche, I'm not kidding it works. There is a more effective recipe but I can't find it at the moment, I'll keep looking.

The probability of rabies, if there's any in your area, is quite high. (Skunks are the most common vector. )



Check with the Vet, and keep the dog quarantined for 10 days.



To remove the odor, bathe the dog in tomato juice. (It works like a charm. ) Then bathe the dog again to get the juice out.

I second that. Your friend needs a lesson in pet ownership. In my state, you are legally bound to vaccinate for rabies.



Dawn dish detergent works well too if you don't have anything else on hand. I also always keep bottled saline just in case the eyes need to be flushed. It is handy to use that way and you could save the animals vision if they take a direct hit.

removing skunk smell from dog

The top recipe worked after the Tomato Juice failed:

1.

1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide

1/4 cup Baking Soda

1 teaspoon liquid soap



Mix in a bucket (it will fizz).

Soak your dog's fur, but be careful not to get any in his eyes.

Use a sponge to clean off his head and around his eyes.

Knead solution into the fur and be sure to get every part of him with it.

Rinse thoroughly.





2.

1 cup of vinegar

1 cup hydrogen peroxide

1 cup of dish soap



Lather WELL, add water until a good thick coat of lather is worked up and let sit for 10 minutes.



Rinse well, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar in 1 gallon of water to rinse and leave on.





3.

1 pint hydrogen peroxide

2/3 cup baking soda

1 tablespoon of citrus-based liquid soap



Sponge mixture onto the dog's fur.



Let sit two to five minutes then rinse with plain water.



Second batch may be needed. Use fresh ingredients.





4.

2/3 water

1/3 organic apple cider



Rinse the dog thoroughly, be careful of his eyes.





I agree with being responsible about keeping shots up to date.

I agree with BV

We let our Doberman out in a big fenced-in yard. Well, one night he went out and wanted back in (as usual). My wife let him in, and a skunk had gotten him in the face. He rubbed his face on a rug, in the kitchen, and the smell woke me up. The backing soda and peroxide took the smell out of the dog, but the house ended up smelling worse than the dog did.

There is also a product called "Odor-Ban" that comes in a concentrate. I keep some diluted in a spray bottle and it takes out absolutely EVERY smell you could think of. All you have to do is spray in on and the smell disappears. Almost magic. .

My dog got skunked late one night while we were up in wisconsin a couple of weeks back. Did the tomato juice thing, let him sleep on the porch, and gave him a regular bath the next morning. Worked great.
