Anyone know where I can get a new aftermarket steering stabilizer?

I was cruising around this weekend, going slightly faster that I should have been, when a dog decides to commit suicide. This thing is almost as big as a Saint Bernard  . I didn't have time to hit the brakes before I plowed over him :(. Felt like hitting a wall.

So I stop and assess the damage ... The front air dam is ripped off, the tie rod has a kink in it, and my steering stabilizer is bent. I managed to straighten the tie rod, but I need another stabilizer. Anyone got a part number for a dual stabilizer for a 2001 3500?

Thanks everyone

Well, the dog had to be a stray. I hit him on a stretch of highway at least ten miles from the nearest house, and there wasn't a collar anywhere in the vicinity of the collision so I don't think it had an owner. Damage isn't very bad at all, except for the dog. He was killed on impact.

RottnDogue, yes, I too am glad that it wasn't a kid.

Kchristopher, I used my shop press to straighten the tie rod. It had a definate bow, so I used a bending die and pressed it, it went back fairly easily.

I'll check with summit on the stabilizers. Thanks for your concerns guys.

Bending the tie-rod back will certainly get you by, but you might go ahead and get a replacement. If the rod was bent badly, it was cold worked when bent and again when it was straghtened. This may have embrittled the rod enough that, over time, it may fail. However, it may not fail at all, but steering is right up there (in priority) with brakes. Anything that might compromise that system I would replace as soon as I could. Just a thought. :)

Gizmo... seems like the damage is minimal... . Glad you didn't wreck your truck trying to avoid hitting the Dog... Must have made quite a mess...

me4osu, the rod was heated slightly to aide in bending it back. It wasn't bent enought to cause much fatigue. I made sure that it was not harmed in any way, but that is a good point for anyone that may encounter the same thing. You mean our trucks have brakes? Are you sure? Sometimes I think they forgot mine .

RottnDogue, I couldn't avoid the dog, but I did DODGE it :p. Ok, that was cheesy, couldn't help it . I did have a time washing the underside of the truck... nasty.

Kris, Call up Glenn Maurer with EGR (909) 898-1168 He can set you up with some awesome stoppers.

I just bought a complete brake setup from him and MAN,, this truck Outstops My Dad's '01 3500 Chevy D-Max.

I got new rotors (Drilled), Pads, (w/front bearings) new rear pads, a BIGGER rear brake cylinder, new rear pads, full synthetic fluid, and Stainless Steel braided brake lines for the front and back.

BIG Difference. You don't have to "Step" on the brakes to stop now.

EDIT: Glenn is in Corona, California.

Hold your wallet. Get some pain medication out.

Is it worth it,, EVERY PENNY. Much more worth it than a new clutch or injectors, Chip, Or anything. This should be one of your first BOMBs,, I have no Idea How I waited so long. It took one wreck and several skids before I finally broke down and did something about Dodges sorry excuse for brakes.

Carbon Kevlar Pad Set = 170. 95

Rear Carbon Kev. Shoes = 179. 95

Brake Fluid (Motul 600C) = 45. 99

Cross drilled rotors L+R = 375. 95 each

Rear Wheel cylinder (1 3/16") = 78. 38 for two

Inner Bearings (two bearings) = 33. 42 total

Outer Bearings (two bearings) = 33. 42 total

Seals (2wd) = 11. 92

Speed bleeders = 40. 88 for kit.

Stainless Steel Braided Kevlar Hose = 189. 95 <Not installed yet

Shipping = 119. 60

$1,656. 26 to finally have a truck I feel safe in,, and can give any other car a challenge in stopping. My truck stops as fast as it goes now. LOL

Seriously, your prices could be different depending on 2wd/4wd and 2 or 4 wheel ABS

Do not let the price concern you.

If my trucks brakes worked as good as they do now,, I would not have crashed my truck a few months back and cause over $1,800 damage to my truck, and $1,600 to the other guy ($1,100 of which *I* Had to pay).

I have found several "Little" things since the wreck, and the bill is over $2K now.
