a lot of the guys count "clicks" or measure thread length to get both springs back in and matching. to squeeze a little more HP out of it, what i do is turn the springs in counting clicks, to get them both to match and in the ball park. then take the torque plate out and set the springs to where the engine will idle. if you go too far it wont idle, it will rev higher. so just keep turning them in, until the idle is effected and stop. put the plate back in and your done :D

Good luck, i get to do mine next week when i get back from Muncie. along with Guages and injectors.

Clean the retainers off and mark with paint so when reassembled (like in the instructions) it will be in the same place. I dodn't clean the retainer and nut off and the paint came right off. Also, count the revolutions to unscrew the nut.

They are very easy to do (well mine wernt. Thats a whole nother story). Like every one else has said count the turns as you take them out. Its alot easier than mesureing. Which way are you going in from? The top or the side? You will like the difference. I did. :D

Bud Fox (love your handle!LOL), Ive done mine a couple/few times. Go in thru the side plug, it's easier. Look out for the Exxon Valdez impression as there will be a fair amount of oil spillage from the port hole. Do as the other guys have suggested about making sure the nuts go on the same distance from the end of the stud (count threads, or whatever). Turn the engine over at the alternator with a 22mm (I think) socket. . makes things pretty easy. Have a SKINNY magnet handy to slide out the springs and shims. Oh, I found Piers instructions a little vague on a couple things... . dont forget to re-install the shims that go under the biggest spring! It makes for a bucking bronco if you forget!

Just wanted to caution you on one thing that Piers doesn't mention in the instructions. The first time you pull out of your driveway, you will be sideways.

thanks for all the replies. I installed them thru the side- just alittle cramped working in that small area.

I removed 3 springs and no shims. I removed 2 bottom plates and just installed the new springs. I started it and it idled right were it did before. I also did not have a single drop of oil come out of the pump- maybe because I was parked on a hill???

Piers- If you get a chance to read this, i wanted to make a suggestion for the instructions. Maybe you could take a pic of the pieces that come out of the pump so people could see them?? i removed one bottom seat and just by accident I stuck my magnet back in the hole and out came the other seat. Not all people(myself included) are familiar with the inner workings of the pump and you know it is almost impossible to see in that hole.

Just a friendly suggestion

Now I have to take it for a driveOo. Oo. Oo.
