I'm doing the vent mod this weekend. I am trying to get as much fuel burned out of the tank as I can before I have to drop the tank. How far have you guys really gone when your fuel level is this low? Currently, my low fuel light is on, gauge is in the red. . almost to E. My overhead says 20 miles DTE. How far do you think I can go beyond this? Please post your experiences with this. Thanks.

I have done one by dropping the tank and one by lifting the bed off. Both short beds. If you have access to a lift, winch, forklift etc, I prefer to lift the bed. Good luck.

Hi,

I have an 04. 5 short bed I've run 10 miles past when the dte said 0. I was getting about 14. 5 mpg at the time and put in 31gals to fill. Therefore there should have been about 3 gals left in the tank. Roughly 21lbs. Not sure where the pick up in the tank is and if it would have been able to even use the last suspected 3 gals.

My truck has the long bed, I ran mine down 20 miles past 0 DTE, there was probably 4-5 gallons remaining when we lowered the tank. I don't know how low you could actually go before the pump would lose its prime, but if I where you I wouldn't chance it. The tank is not that heavy and diesel only weights 7 lbs. /gal.

Having someone to assist you would be a big help. My brother assisted me when I did mine, I was very grateful.

Without a vent installed, my truck has gone 30 miles with the DTE reading 0. I had my cell phone ready to call for a tow at any min but I wasn't willing to buy the cheap-o fuel that was near where I was. I needed to get to my regular Chevron station for my fill up. Once there, I got 29 gallons in, but wasn't willing to nurse the extra few gallons in after the foam settled down, as there were too many guys behind me that needed to use the diesel pump.

I also went 30 miles past DTE 0 when I did the vent-kit install. It looked to be 3 or 4 gallons (guessing at the amount) left in the tank. Also I used a transmission jack to lower the tank which helped a lot.

I dropped the tank about a mile after the low level light came on, it had about 2 gallons left and 30 miles to empty. I wouldn't have made it very far until I had aerated fuel. Good luck!

I have gone 30 miles pulling trailer getting 12-13 mpg after DTE went 0 then added 38 gallons(non-modded tank). your mileage may vary

routine is light on DTE 30-40 miles and add 33 gallons

in the vehicle manual it tells you how much fuel you have after the DTE is 0 and also how much after the tank empty light comes on. I think its 15% left of tank capacity after the light goes on and 8% when it reads DTE 0. So based on your MPG you can get it pretty darn close to empty without purging the pump. Hope this helps

My '05 3500 DRW went 17 miles after the gauge read 0. And then I had to call for fuel. I made 50 on my '01 so I felt I could make it around that far with this one.

When I did the tank mod I drove 30 miles past DTE and I still had way too much fuel remaining in my tank leaving it very heavy to lower and deal with. I wish I had driven at least 60 miles past DTE.

If you have 2 people to get the tank out, a few gallons of fuel sloshing around is manageable. If your by yourself like I was, a few gallons rushing to one end will definitely be a handful. If your near 0 and have 2 people, I would call it good. If your by yourself, maybe run it a little lower beyone zero and just know in the back of your head that you may have a few gallons still rolling around in there.
