Has anybody put on a 3 or 4in donaldson exhaust on? What did you think of the sound?

DGamelin,

I am running a Donaldson 4" straight through muffler. It has that typical 'big rig' sound. ;)

Aloha,

Matt

I need to get a Donaldson muffler for mine. I dont think they are bad. Lot of farmers where I grew up run Donaldson mufflers and pipes on their semis, and they sound good and last decently, even the aluminized stuff. good thing about DOnaldson is that they are relatively inexpensive- a 4" straight through can be had for $50-75.

If you are going to be working on the exhaust, I wouldnt mess with 3". 4" is only pennies more, and gives you almost twice the flow potential.

I have a 4" in and out Donaldson muffler. It is real quiet and seems to give me the same numbers, boost and speed up same old hill, as no muffler trial. i don't know if it can be easily fit under a pickup, but I will search out measurements and post.
The roar is reduced to basic engine noise. Not cheap, $160 I think.

This is the parts number on my bill for a 4" in and out Donaldson muffler.
M110189, I think it is the manuf number. Donaldson has a pretty detailed web site. They have a number of 4" mufflers. It is not a DOC (Diesel Ocy Catalyst) model. Web shows that version with that number also plus DOC.
This one measures approx 40" long, 12" diameter. This is on a front engined motorhome, so i have lots of room. The one it replaced was shorter and 6" dia.
It was a little pricey but when it comes to my wife's birthday I'll spend what I have to.

i am like 90% sure that the muffler that came with my stans 4 inch exhaust is a Donaldson ..... it has never been hooked to anything and it has got the mounts for the first gen on it already ... ..... it will not physically fit under my trailduster there is not a straight part of pipe long enough to make it work.

it is sitting in my garage i placed an add a while back in the classifieds but got no response ... ... if anyone is interested pm me

edit

i just looked on stans site and it is a donaldson, it is listed on his site for 150, i am willing to let it go for much less then that, i know i am not supposed to post this here but i am just trying to pass a good deal on to some fellow diesel nuts

Thanks, If any more of you guys have any part numbers that would be great. The stock muffler just fell off my 93 at 240k so I need to do something now. My 04. 5 has 39k on it I see that donaldson has a lot of them. It looks like they have a 4in that might fit with the stock exhaust.

DGamelin,

For what it's worth, I spoke to Stan himself on the phone and he informed me that the 4" Donaldson muffler that comes with their exhaust systems outflows a 3" straight pipe on a flow meter. Its shear mass contributes to this.
