You guys that have a 98. 5-99 needing a new lift pump might want to benefit from my headache last weekend. Knowing that the lift pump was dying out, I ordered a new lift pump for my 98. 5 from local Cummins dealer (not the regional distributor) and he got me the new 3990105. He didn't say a darned thing about the extension harness 4025182, so sure nuff Sat night, I changed the fuel filter and the old lift pump couldn't even pull enough to fill the can. So I popped it off and--SURPRISE--the new pump doesn't have the extended wiring harness, and the little stubby leads off the engine wiring harness won't reach the new pump
I have absolutely got to get this truck running, so my buds and I cut the harness leads, crimp on a couple of 6" extensions to the black & yellow leads, and then the FUN starts. There is no room whatsover to get both arms back down into that hole to crimp the butt connectors back onto the engine wiring harness. Finally we jack up the left side of the truck, one bud lays under there and holds up the exension harness, I lay on top of the engine and hold the engine wiring harness with a pair of 12" long needle-nose pliers, and left-handed John is able to reach in with his gorilla arm and crimp the two leads back together. Point of story: Get the harness if you got the older truck!! Or be sure to tackle the rewiring with two extra helpers, one of whom must be left-handed!
