Today my ISP told me that DSL is no longer provided for my area. They are ending my contract and expect me to pay them $125 early termination fee.

What I did to cause this to happen:

Changed the billing name with my phone company

DSL Extreme is a terrible ISP and I intend to let everybody know

Did you by chance change it to a business account? That is one reason that I can think of why a TelCo would terminate your contract and expect you to pay. Others would be you running a server or you computer has been hacked and you are sending out spam mails unknowingly, the TelCo would have seen your excessive use of the line and terminated your connection.

Here is some free help to make sure you computer is clean. DSL Reports Security forum FAQ

Sounds bogus to me. If you pay with a credit card, dispute the charges. Also, ask them to show you what part of the contract you failed to honor.

Did you move? If you're at the same address and DSL is no longer provided in your area, how can that be your fault?  Some of these companies need to be out of business!

According to the local phone company, we re too far from the central office to get DSL. But they have been working on installing fiber optic in my area. They still say Im out of range.

Thats why I went with cable.

Its about twice as fast as DSL from what Iv learned.

nope, same address. All I did was call up the phone company and switch the name on the bill from my old roomates name to my name. There was never even an interuption in phone service.

The excuse they gave me was that they are shutting down that office, so no new business is being allowed in that area. And since my phone line had been interupted, they would not reconnect the line share.

I sat on the phone all day yesterday back and forth. Finally talked to their General manager. They are going to drop me from DSL down to Dialup and let me finish out my contract (6 more months). Which is a lot better than what they wanted before. I still need dialup at least til I can get the cable run up to the house (comes up to the front gate right now).

My biggest beef with them is that they ran me around for 2 weeks trying to figure out why my internet just suddenly quit working. Come to find out it was the phone company not reconnecting the line share. It's a bunch of bs for them to not know it was going on.

DSL extreme has terrible customer service. Their Tech support is very helpful if you don't mind spending 30 mins on hold to talk to them. However, there doesn't seem to be a connection between tech support and billing. For some reason they didnt' get the news about the local phone company shutting one of their offices down. :/
