Don't worry about an oil film on turbo blades

The new Duramax PCV gasses are routed directly into the turbo inlet. According to the LLY code 04 Duramax information on the diesel page:



"The new PCV system now routes crankcase gases into the turbo air inlet, to be recycled in the combustion process. An oil film is considered normal inside the turbo compressor and intercooler/ducting/intake manifold due to the composition of the crankcase gases. "



Seems as though K&N oil on the blades would be minor in comparison. Altough sensors down stream on ISB's still pose an issue.

I don't worry so much about oil as I worry about the particulate matter that might cling to the oil. How far out of balance does a turbo spinning at 100,000RPM have to be before it decides to take a trip on its own?

Seen many where it has a big build up, and after cleaning it, the turbo fails, ugly. Only good way to clean it, remove the compresor casing, and use brake cleaner... . Don't go half way.
 
I would think anything sticking to spinning blades would be pretty evenly applied - and like the other comment above, if you're getting THAT much foreign material on the blades, you have other problems to worry about.



I don't care what any automaker sez - I want to keep *MY* intake CLEAN! ;) :p
 
Some of the marine applications use a Walker airsept or Racor CCV and ingest the "vapors" into the intake system. These applications usually end up with maintenance issues as the turbo gets coated enough to fail to spoolup properly. Then it's time to do some serious disassembly and cleaning.

I just run my boat engine's vapors into a "puke container" keeping my intake for clean air only... no gunk problems at all.

I just spent a couple hours this morning cleaning out my newly aquired 99 Jetta TDI (75K miles). The intake passages, turbo, intercooler, were totally yucky with oil film. When I put it all back together, I changed it around and ran a dump hose from the valve cover fitting and blocked off the intake fitting. Don't want to go thru that again.
