I asked this question before in another thread, but it was missed.

I need a new set of speakers and want to know how deep the speakers for the doors can be. Crutchfield recommends Alpines that are 2 13/16" deep, but I found a better set I like that are 3 1/4" deep. Someone said that Crutchfield is wrong and there is room for deeper speakers.

Does someone know? What have you used that fit? The ones I like are Alpine 6x9 R series.

Thanks

I built a plywood face plate and covered it in grey carpet. The face plate then was bolted on top of the door panel squeezing the door panel and door metal together for strength and clarity due to the door panel masking the speaker in the stock configuration.

This setup allowed me to mount separate Morel woof/mid and tweets on the panel.

You can go about 2 3/4"-3" top mount depth in a 6 x 9. Any deeper and it will butt up against the window channel. You can get a spacer to move them away, but you will need to cut the door panel. Try to stay at about 5/8" tweeter protrusion. Even this will cause the door panel to bulge.

I had 6 x 9's in the door until recently. Then I went with a 6. 5 Component speaker & tweeter. No comparison. MUCH better.

hello blakers,

I have pioneers 4 ways in my 97 ram the mounting depth is

3 7/8 of an inch on the pioneers, but you will have to watch it when you install them, because they are only a 1/4" away from missing the window when it goes up and down.

braible

Do you mean 2-7/8"?

The reason I ask is I tried a pair of Infinity Kappa 693. 5i 6 x 9's with a top mount depth of 3-1/4" in the doors. No way would they fit. At least 1/2" too deep.

hemi dart,

here are the specs of my pioneers TS-A6995 top mounting-mounting height 1/2 , depth 3 1/2

bottom mounting- tweeter protrusion 7/8 , depth 3 7/8

I have them in there, so Idon't know if D/C change something or not in different year of truck. i got mine in my doors . I can't really say why you could not get those infinity's in your truck, because they have a less of a mounting depth then mine.

I guess thing would be to buy speakers locally at a place that will let you take them back if they don't fit. Or else just get the S series Alpine that they say will fit. They'll probaby sound 10x better than stock anyway and they're half the price of the better R series Alpines.

Thanks guys!

Has anyone replaced the factory tweeter? Looking at a set of components, and want to replace the a-pillar Infinity with a higher quality tweeter. Is this possible to do behind the factory tweeter grill? I have 2 gauges in a replacement a-pillar, if that makes a difference. Thanks for any help.

For the doors, if you dont have the tweet tweets on the column, I would go with either 3 way Boston Acoustics, or 3 way Eclipse 6x9's... . High quality speakers, and well worth the money... . I have some Bostons and I am looking to get another set, as I have lost my high range of hearing over the years, and the speakers have lost their high range of sound... Remember, go cheap, and get what you pay for!

But, will they fit? Where do you get them from?

Yes... they will definitely fit! I have Boston's in mine, and I am considering Eclipses... . Not for sure yet..... but yes, they will fit, Exact fit at that!

Anyone know where to get these? Part numbers? Model numbers?

Thanks.

Blakers,

I tried to put in aftermarket 6x9's in my 96 and found that nothing other than the Jensens would fit (that was several years ago 97or 98, I think). They would hit the window. Sooo instead of not rolling down the window, I made a lexan insert and used 6" rounds. A great set of 6" rounds will kick a fair set of 6x9's. But to each his own.

Just replaced my front door speakers last weekend and was concerned about depth also. Speakers measured 3 1/16th of an inch. They fit! No room to spare. the window channel is actually off to the side a little or I would have had a problem. The window misses the speaker but not by much. I put a liberal amount of soap on the speaker magnet to "see" if they were touching when rolled up and down. No soap on the windows. You will need a spacer for anything deeper. I suppose if the magnet was large enough it would hit the channel, but it would have to be a big magnet.

The depth is measured from the mounting surface (the door) not the depth of the entire speaker. The mounting depth of the speakers I installed was 3 1/16th. Hope this helps

Crutchfield (out of Chicago) Crutchfield.com???

has a good table of mounting depths for every available speaker place and what sizes will fit in different areas.

They also do a good job of indicating what stereo sizes will fit and if special mounting kits are needed.

Does anyone know of a different site that lists options? I looked at the Crutchfield site before and they only list one option - a 6x9 Alpine - which I listened to at Circuit City. I was not impressed with their sound.

Speaker Problem Solved!

I finally got my speaker problem solved. Bought some 6x9 Polk Audio EX series for the front and some 6. 5" Polk Audio EX for the rear. Installed them and they fit perfect and sound great. They weren't listed anywhere as far as fitting or not, but they did fine.

Getting the door panels and rear panels off is a piece of cake. Not problem. You do however have to purchase the wire plug adabtors, or you'll need to wiciup something.

Door speakers

I tried to install 6x9 Pioneer 6998 speakers in the doors- they were at least 3/4" too deep. Chrysler must have changed the door/window configuration in various years, but I know for a fact that the window channel in the 1997's prevents installing anything deeper than 2 7/8". I ened up with infinity perfect 6. 5" components (with 6X9 to 6. 5 adaptor plate from Crutchfield) which sound better than any 6x9 but they do cost a little more. (Even a pair of Infinity 6. 5" Reference series Components will perform better than most 6X9's I think (they can be had for about 139 dollars)
