I’m a new member and now have some knowledge in beefing up my 12v Cummins. One concern is will this shorten the life of the engine?

I guess the short answer would be "probably". Once you modify anything for more power (over the max rating from the factory which I think is 315 HP for the 5. 9BT in marine apps. ) engine life would most likely be shorter.

Where in Washington are you? I spend a lot of time in Woodland.

I normally frequent the "correctly" valved part of the site. I do not really know what a 1996 5. 9BT was rated at, but I think it is 175-180 HP... . does anyone know what they were rated at?

Could be a 180

Depending on the state, could be a 180 hp. Look at the ID tag on the right side of the gear case on the front of the engine. Should give the spec's as to your particular 6bt. I wonder why the Calif. trucks, as with most vehicles get robbed like that:mad: .

Mike, the extra valves and the electronic mess were added due to EPA pressure to lower emissions, they do little else but cause problems.

Well there must be a 370hp 6Bt out there or we wouldnt have 370 Diamond B injectors. The "beefing" up will only shorten engine life when the extra power is used. When driven normally that power might as well not be there so no extra wear. Unless you are a "puller" or drag racer you prolly wont ever notice any shortening of engine life and if its well cared for will last as long as you like the truck.

come out and meet up with us on 2/02/02 up the street from Fife;)

He are a bunch of diesel nuts that have a great time. :)

GOT HOOP ;)

Any mods you do that lower EGTs will result in longer engine life and better fuel economy. By adding extra power you will usually have lower EGTs when you aren't using the extra power, which for most of us non racers is most of the time.

Man o man I don't wanna start a big A$$ fire, but we got 4 new 24 valvers in the parking lot at work and they ***** like mad about all the electronics on board. Yeah, Bill I know what those 12 extra are for... pathetic... "Mike you got 230 hp 605 torque for a few hundred bucks"... makes them nuts! Not to mention my buddy Henry "Phord", (PSD), 2000 bananas of "stuff" on his and we did it on the freeway, he smoked and choked and I went bye bye!! Poor guy has EGT trouble big time. . I would like to help him but I do not understand the PSD. \
