Has anybody used the AP Racing DOT 5. 1 brake fluid offered in the Geno's Garage catalog? If you have, how has your experience with it been?

Terrible stuff for anything but all out racing. It wont absorb any moisture so the minimal moisture that always colects in any system settles to the bottom of your brake components and rots out stuff like master cyl. , calipers, antilock parts etc. Just my . 02.

I think you're thinking about the DOT 5 stuff which is all silicone and won't mix with anything else. The AP 5. 1 is a premium backwards compatible with the DOT 3 and 4 stuff as well. See Link for info:

Fluid Details

I picked up some at GENO's but just haven't gotten around to flushing the system yet. Hope this helps.

Poe I think your correct, the 5. 1 is glycol based so it is hydroscopic like the DOT 3 & 4 stuff but has the heat capacities of the DOT 5 Silicone based stuff.

I know my brother runs the 5. 1 in his Vette for the clutch since the resivoir is in the bell housing and get stupid hot. He has great results, but I am not sure it is necessary in our trucks. Considering how hydroscopic brake fluid is you would do better going with the DOT 3 or 4 and more frequent changes.

Yeah, I think most everyone would benefit more with regular fluid changes than a high performance fluid. That being said, I think the upgraded fluid, (higher dry and wet boiling points), is a great asset when used in a road racing type application where the brake fluid boiling point needs to be as high as possible. Just ask those hard core road race folks what happens when you let the brake fluid deteriorate.
