As my extended warrantee on my 95 expired in August of this year and I lost 5th gear in September at 74,248 miles I decided it was time to do something about the dowel pin. Fifth gear cost me $840. 00 and they didn't replace the shaft. Only the gear and the nut.
I followed Joe George's instructions that he sent me about a year ago and it was a 'piece of cake'. Took about 3 hours to take it apart, put the tab in place and put it all back together. My dowel pin was sticking out about 1/4 inch. Who knows if it was coming out or if thats as far as they put it in..... I punched it in and installed the tab with a longer bolt . The hardest part was installing the seal in the front cover.
I feel much safer now that 5th gear and the dowel pin are taken care of. Although some people have not had that much luck with 5th gear, I hope mine is there to stay.
