For those who were concerned as I with the Killer dowl pin. I called Dodge customer service at 1-800-992-1997. I spoke with a very pleasant operator who looked up all the recall and warranty info complaints on the
1997 Cummings equiped trucks. There has been
no Dealer anywhere in the USA who has found this problem occuring in 97 trucks. So if there is anyone reading this who owns a 1997
truck and has had the dowl pin destroy your engine while under the 100,000 mile warranty,
please contact me. Thankyou

My 95 spit one out and took a chunk of the gear housing too! Leak oil, you bet!

I think "Diesel Burner" in California? Had difficulties like I did last March (He has a 96 or 97??). I've read of a 97 or two, which regurgitated the dowel pin, but don't remember which goat tender that it belonged too.

Call the 800 Diesels number at Cummins they hear of a few. Even spoke with a lucky man there who changed one with an engineer! Fun, Fun. .

I think Dr. D's "Sickly" may have pucked one too! I hope I haven't made fun of a "Sickly" goat #ad

Good luck.

Mine's a 98 and puked it also,,Glad to see somebody is getting the same friggin answers I have been given during all my calls(phone dialing finger is stressed),,Got another front cover coming,a machinest friend of mine and I are going to see if there is a way to prevent this from happening again to me,,Personally I'm tired of all the stories and runaround I've gotten from Dodge and Cummins,,Guess the old saying is true,If you want something done right,Do it your self,,I'm not sitting on my rear waiting for this to happen again, might not be as lucky the next time,,If I'd been in the stratosphere rpm range and not idling like I was,the destruction would have been tremendous,,So to Dodge and Cummins warranty people,I'd have to say something I do not want to print... ... ...

Mine's a 98. It was manufactured 11/10/97. Don't know when the engine was built. And it did spit the dowel pin into the gears. Warranty covered it but it was a hassle. To make sure that it doesn't happen again, make sure that you get the latest front cover. They ordered a new one for me and it was identical to the last one. I made them get one that captures the dowel under the cover.

Thanks for the reply. I had called the Cummings number long befor I called Dodge. They told me only a very small percent had this problem. Could not tell me any serial numbers. Told me to call Dodge. Those 97s you heard about. Would you be able to give me any E-mail address or where you read this? I am looking for solid facts and examples of only 97 trucks. If I have been lied to by Dodge, I need Vin #s to prove my point and make them fix it befor it breaks!

If you are doing this work yourself,is it true that the cam shaft has to come out? How much is involved with getting at this killer pin?

Please see my post under the Killer Dowel pin thread. You might also check the old posts, where there are several more threads on the topic.

I too was concerned about the KDP and according to a 1-800-diesels technician this problem is not really tied to a specific date or production batch but rather a series of incidents. First, they put in an almost identical metric dowel by accident so it is not even a light press fit, and second, the hole in the gear case for the dowel is machined all of the way through so there is no material to capture the dowel.

Mine was staked shut with a punch and filled with a little loctite when the gear case cover was removed to replace the front main seal. The tech at the DC dealer said it was a $1700 job if the pin came out and broke the case.

I realize this is the "later" 12 valve group, but is this dowel problem ONLY relative to later (at least later than MY early '91!) engines? OR, is this something *I* should be concerned about too? #ad
