Anybody thought about slicing a 4" ID straight thru muffler in half longwise, with a bandsaw, and clamping it over the downpipe to eliminate drone?

Yea Doc, Darn I was just sitin here and all of a sudden I thought of doing just that very thing or was it something else I was thinking of?

Seems like a lot of work....

I just put in a 4" resonator and it cured the drone. No performance loss either. Cheap, effective way to go.

I like the idea of a resonator better. Hopefully I will get a 4" exhaust soon. I like the quietness of the factory system though, so in is not a high priority. I read in the flowmaster thread that one could request a resonator with the system. This true?

LOLOLO hey doc these guys really like to bust your chops lolo I got a feeling you've got it cummin hehehe. I have done stacks on my 981/2 24 valve I did use the resinator that came stock and I put it on the stock down which is 3'' and the resinator is 3'' in the front and 4'' in the back so I put a wy on the 4'' side and then 2\ 4'' stacks it does sound nice and no drown if I was to do again I would go with 4'' down pipe and 2/ 5'' stacks w/out resinator, anyhow anything you put around the pipe will help, but check all your hangers make sure the are not to stiff you can get a lot of noise from them aswell

good luck, JDM JOE

the cheap fix!

Get a couple extra 4" pipe clamps and put two per section of pipe to the muffler. If ya feel really ambitious make some to fit the muffler. This in essence changes the harmonic frequency of the pipe. I did it on a previous truck with a jardine system, except the muffler part and it helped a bunch, but did not come back to stock levels, which I think was the muffler still vibrating.

The drone I have sound like it's in the muffler area just down and behind the rear seat on the passengers side. I just purchased 80 sq. inch of B-Quiet- Beaver Tail which should help with a lot of the noise, I'm debating whether or not to put two layers on the back wall of the cab. Has anyone else used beaver tail?

I fabbed out a 5" exhaust system with a 9"diam x 16"L resonator. This system had the drone at 2000 RPM. I later changed out the resonator to a 48" truck muffler. This cured the problem. I think some of you are being closed mined with thinking you have to shorten the muffler to elimate the drone. How 'bout a longer muffler? Worked great for me. No drone at all.
