I saw this message, or words to that effect, for the first time in 40,000 miles yesterday. I was on the way to have my topper re-installed and it only got down to 80% full when I had to shut the engine off. After the installation I drove the truck 40 or 50 miles to see if it would complete, but the message never came back.

1. Searching the forums, I read that the truck never lets you know when it is doing a regeneration. Did I get this message because the filter was 100% full?

2. What are the implications of the DPF getting to be 100% full? My driving style has not changed significantly from the baseline I ran for the last two years. I did get some rough running at idle after cold start and stumble on acceleration when cold for a few trips after filling up fuel at a station I have not used before. Did I perhaps get some bad fuel that contributed to the rough running and DPF full?

3. Did it continue the regen without informing me because the DPF was not full?

4. Anything I should be concerned about or check?

Thanks,

Al

I have never seen the 100% full on any of my trucks. It should not get that high. You need to get it out and run it and work it and see if it clears out. If not there may be an issue causing the dpf to either fill up too fast or not be able to fully regenerate and complete a regeneration. Are you still under warranty? If so have the dealer check it out but it is likely they will not do anything until you get a cel.
Edit: i would just see if the message comes back. Maybe drain the fuel filters to see what comes out. Possibly try a better fuel station and consider changing at least the rear filter if i suspected bad fuel. Otherwise just run it. You would probably go into limp mode before any damage was done from a full dpf. Good luck.

This DID happen to me a few times particularly when I was running around in my town chasing parts, grocery shopping, etc. I mentioned it to the service writer at the dealership and he assured me it was probably an erroneously thrown code and message. He also iterated that had it been 100% full I (and you) would not be able to get more than 5 MPH. I question that from him but did not push him on it. He cleared the code (which, by the way you and I can do for free with an OBD-II reader and app on the phone) and sent me on my way less $50.
The code and message came back but as soon as I hit the interstate with my load of cars, the message and code never came back.
So, what can you derive from all of this? I would say. Get on the interstate and run it for 10 miles or so in the upper RPM range and this issue may go away. I hope this helped. let us know what transpires.

Has anyone ever actually had their truck go into full-blown limp mode? I read about it, but haven't read a story yet where it truly happened.

Hey there!! I have been following that DPF 100% full thread over on TDR. I'm a member but for some reason it won't let me post. I wanted to post that there is a TSB for the DPF full on the 2016's. Mine did this about a month ago plus a CEL so it wouldn't let it regen. Mine should NOT have been full as I tow 99 percent of the time. ANyway, once it cold started 3x it Immediatly went into Regen and did its thing like it should have. CEL stayed on one more day and went out. Took to dealer and they performed the TSB. I just bought and Installed a CTS2 monitor only and have not seen it do an active regen " Yet" LOL I think some passive ones cause the DPF temp will get to 800 while the other EGTs only read 4-500.. How often should my truck actually regen??? I have been told some never do active regen cause they tow so much? Thanks!

I think they all do active regen. They just don't post a message unless they get to 100%.

Might be towing frequently reduces how often the truck actively regens. Doesn't eliminate active regen.???

Last year I towed every month (9000# trailer) except May-August. This year only one trip in each of January, April and May. So there may be something to the lack of towing. However, the message hasn't returned, and I only saw it go to 80% before I turned the truck off. I went for a long 45 mph drive afterwards, so that may have helped.
