codes-new

Has anyone partially cleaned out I. E. 3" diameter hole down the center of the DPF filter? I have read many of the threads about deleting this item and all the codes and fines possibly involved. My thought is to take a hole saw down the center of the filter and then place it back on the truck, leaving all the sensors etc, on it.

My main questions are

1. Will it still throw all the codes?

2. Will the regen process be increased in duration and between events?

I am tired of loosing ½ MPG during and for sometime after the event and looking to increase mileage and performance.

07. 5 Dodge 6. 7ltr Cummins 4” exhaust, Edge with attitude programmer

You will have issues. Unless you get a programmer (i. e. Smarty or H&S) to be code free and eliminate the regens.

Since you have an Edge. Buy SIMS and DPF delete pipe. Keep your stock exhaust in tact. You may need it later down the road for whatever reason.

Flo Pro 6. 7L DPF Delete Pipe

H&S Dodge 6. 7L EGT Sensor Sims

Also make sure if you have smog testing in your area. Most do some kind of visual to pass. You'll need to go back to stock for the test. Also warranty on the engine is most likely kissed goodbye (even though your edge is an in-line tuner. They will see other parameters that will throw a red flag). Just a couple things you have to think about before deleted.

I agree with jmill
I run my truck with smarty jr me and pro-flo 5" tbe for 6000 miles without code and improve in mpg. Do not destroy your dpf.
Good luck !

Thanks

Thanks, for the info! I had thought that if I bore a hole down the center that the DPF would partially work and not throw to many codes. I am aware that the warranty is gone, and I can except that. I have looked at the H&S sims and not researched them enough to drop the $$.

At this point I am lucky that the COMMUNIST REPUBLIC of MARYLAND , doesn't do smog on diesel yet... key word yet.

I have done the 4" hole with a 4" pipe down the middle for a friend who hauls, and has to go through the scales. he got an H&S but had to have the DPF in place. Works great with the H&S, but you will have a bad DPF after that.

I'm guessing he'll/she'll just tell them that the DPF was/is cracked and that will explain the black tailpipe and extra noise... :D

Seriously, most DOT "officials" don't have the slightest clue, but ONE might!

Yeah, the DPF and cat will run you at LEAST $5k to buy new.

The 6. 7's run pretty clean when deleted so long as you don't add more fuel. With the H&S turned up on my old 08 it would freight-train like the best of them.

I have found that the edge gives me great power and still stays pretty clean. I do start to see a little smoke when I turn the edge and the Atomizer on full blast. LOL

About to Lose the DPF/EGR on '09 4500

Friends,

I purchased the H&S EGR Delete and Flo Pro DPF delete pipe for my '09 4500. I'm holding off a couple of weeks so I can order/install 5" stacks when I perform the mods. I already have the Smarty 6. 7 to preogram deleting the regen events. Can't wait to see the results. Keeping the EGR and DPF in case they start checking for them here in TX.

I'll post pics when done.

We were talking about this issue as it relates to motorcyles one day this week at lunch and one of the guys claimed that roadside checks are being performed in Houston and Dallas.

I don't know if that is true. Does anyone know? Is that a fact or a bogus rumor?

Ron,

I don't read any mention of diesel engines in that link but with all that focus and effort on gasoline engines in those three big metropolitan areas already in place I would expect that those cities and the bureaucrats in Austin are itching to add diesel engine testing when they can.

Harvey/All,

You're right... just wonder if the gasoline emsision testing equipment can be calibrated for diesel? Also, it would be very easy to start testing emissions on all vehicles. I'm not too worried about emmisions inspections unless it a TX DPS officer. :{

I could pla the dump country hick, saying that "dang thang" plugged up with soot and burned off. Had to put a pipe in its place.

Ha ha. Truth fully, if its possible to get 14 to 15 mpg and not smoke up the neighborhood, I'm for it, although I'm getting 1 and 1/2 mpg less than my 3500. The mpgs towing are the same at 8. 8mpg avg GCVW 28,600 lbs at 70mpg.

Don't know if you saw it, but I accidently put the Smarty on level 5 adding 90 hp and 180 ftlbs. This rig never downshifted out of tow/haul 5th od. There was a new F-350 w/ scorpion kept beating me on the downhills and i'd catch and pass him on the uphills. This 6. 7 and Asin is bad to the bone.

I don't want to hijack this thread... I'm going to post my subject in my own thread. Thought process is to get the attn of all the C&C owners, since our frame, ECM programming and emmisions are different from the HD p/u's.

Ron,

My guess is the testing equipment and written procedures are not easily adaptable to diesel engines but some petty bureaucrat in Austin surely has it in mind at some future date if they can get it past the legislature.

I've considered removing the junk on my truck and asked for information two or three times but always stop short of deciding to do it because of the penalties and cost of replacing all the OEM junk if forced to.

I missed your Furd story but am glad to hear it now. I love stories like yours.

I'll follow your new thread on the subject.

Never get rid of the OE stuff, put it in the corner in your shed/garage. It's heavy and annoying to deal with, but the $5k+ replacement cost should you need it is well worth the hassle. As far as reinstalling the exhaust goes, it's not that much of a hassle so long as you've got room to shimmy underneath. The EGR on your 08 is more of a pain than the newer trucks, as apparently you can simply disable the EGR on '10+ whereas with the older 6. 7s you have to physically remove it to eliminate it. That becomes more of a hassle - however I suspect you could probably take a pair of EGR gaskets and have some thin steel plate machined to size. Bolt the plates between the EGR and the exhaust and the EGR wouldn't pass any exhaust but it would remain in place for visual inspection and ease of returning to stock - simply unbolt the flange and pull the steel out, then bolt it back down long enough to clear any readiness codes and take it in for inspection.

In WA, emissions testing on OBD2 compliant vehicles is simply plugging into a scanner to check and see if there are any DTCs and to verify all of the readiness tests have completed. I don't think adapting that to diesels is hard at all.
