The Reason for today.

I just traded for a DPMS LR-308 with 24" stainless bull barrel. Has anyone on here had any experience with a gun like this? I don't have any idea what I'm going to do with it. It might work on a hog hunt, if it doesn't involve walking too far because it's heavy! I guess shooting targets off a bench would work, too.

DPMS makes a decent gun.
If you have a little know how and dont mind buying some cheap tools you can change the caliber to several different choices,or even a lighter barrel.
BTW 24" is too long IMO. 20-22" is all you need for a 308 to get all the velocity it will make. Sure you may gain a few FPS but it aint worth it.

If opinions and butts were candies and nuts :D... ... I think 24" is just about right for lighter bullets, too short for heavies. I've got a . 308 barrel I don't use, which the rifle currently has a . 260 Reminton barrel on it. I also have a . 243 rifle, which I'm about to rechamber with a SS Kreiger barrel I just got..... I like heavy bullets for long range accuracy. In my opinion (here we go!! :-laf) the longer barrel and the 200 fps it can(sometimes) produce makes a world of difference. Handloading does, as well. It all depends on you and your preferences. If it's too heavy, you might try trading your upper to someone and going to a shorter, smaller contour barrel. You lose cycle rate and accuracy, as well as weight, but to shoot hogs with, it's a neat little cartridge. I love my . 260 for hogs, and it will certainly lay 'em down with 125 Noslers or 120 sierras. My . 243 wouldn't shoot anything heavier than 95 grains accurately, so it limited my range to under 500 yards, and I hated that, hence the new 1:8 twist 26" Krieger barrel for shooting 107 Sierra's. ..... we'd all have a Merry Christmas!

6. 5 Creedmoor seems to be a decent ctg on paper to me anyway.

If youre handloading, I'd try to keep it on the lighter side of max loads.
