Anyone running one of these? Looks like a good idea.

Pic and Info

A little cooler air couldn't hurt and I bet it sounds good too. Though I'm not sure if the rubber wouldn't muffle the whistle a little instead. Anyone?

Cool! That should solve the looudd turbo sound associated with the metal variety. I'll have to drop by DPP and take a look at one for myself (even though I don't have a 3rd Gen anymore). If Jeff (Dave's cohort at DPP) has one on his truck maybe he'll let me have a listen so I can comment on the turbo whine. Vaughn

Nice products.

Those foam filters look cool.

Also, the clear scotty intake with the foam filter is just plain neato! Oo.

The intake "s" hose is nice, but too late already have the TT from AFE.

I stopped by Diesel Power Products and spec'd out the tube tonight. Pretty sweet :) I'd pick that over the torque tube. Dave believes it will do a little better insulating against underhood heat compared to the metal variety from AFE. Jeff tried one on his '03 but says you can still hear a fair amount of turbo whine. It's probably quieter than the torque tube but still louder than stock (as you would expect).

The air filters look good too. They have a few varieties, cone and airbox replacements. Between DPP and Scotty they decided to ditch AFE and go with this since they felt it was a better filter design. They're fairly inexpensive but I don't know how hard they are to clean.

I ended up buying a TAG II, going to give that a try on the '96.

Performance would be similar to an AFE torque tube.

The stock tube is more restrictive.

This tube should help with spool up time.

Thanks for the report Vaughn. I think I will invest in the full Cool Hose kit with the filter to turbo hose, intercooler boots, and intercooler to intake hose. I'm going to wait until I get my gauges in so I can report any differences. :)

DPP has some innovative ideas. But is this hose compatible with the TAG? It doesn't look like it is, but maybe I'm wrong. Hopefully Car_Nut57 will respond.

The new TAG-III is compatible with the metal Torque Tube and our new Cool Hose. The TAG-III also fits most aftermarket turbos, such as the HX-40, B1, etc. and does not require any modifications to the turbo or intake hose. The Cool Hose has only been tested on Jeff's 04 in our shop to verify fit and performance. Jeff says he feels like the Cool Hose added a small amount of power and has a sound louder that the stock unit and comparable to the metal tube, but slightly less than the metal tube. Of course Jeff's truck has a TAG-III in it which also helps to muffle sound a little.

Show us numbers for the cool tube. The air flowing through the tube travels too fast to pick up any apreciable temps. Hype or fact?I have not seen a foam filter that out flowed a gauze type yet. Has Uni found a new secret since the last test were performed on a flow bench?

Sorry Bob, I don't have any numbers for the Cool Hose other than the dimensions. The rate the air travels through the tube and how much heat it might pick up will depend on the rate the air is flowing through the tube and the amount of turbulence of that air on its way. The heat pick up from the metal turbe may not be significant, but why not do all you can to keep it cool by using a materal that naturally insulates. I cannot comment on flow numbers between cotton and the foam filters as we have not done this test and do not have a flow bench. I can however tell you that on Jeff's 2004 in our shop we could feel the difference in performance of the foam filter and the EGTs did drop more with the foam in the Scotty RA3.

It's hard to tell from that pic. Is the tube closer to the exhaust manifold shield than the stock hose? The only reason I ask is because my bypass setup is mounted right there off the block and it's probably only 1cm away from the factory tubing.

It does seem to be just slightly closer to the shield than the stock hose. If you look closely at the stock hose connecting to the turbo it does have a slight bend in it to get clearance to the heat shield on the exhaust.

Carnut57 - if you check my reader's rigs gallery, all the way at the bottom I have a pic of the bypass filter mount. Now it's at the wrong angle to see the sideways clearance, but you can see where it is. With the filters mounted there is approx 1-2 cm clearance, with the stock hose zip tied/pulled sideways a bit, away from the heat filters... Maybe this thing isn't for me.

I can't tell from that picture if the Cool Hose would fit or not. It does follow the factory hose routing very closely, but does not have the slight offset of the factory elbow at the turbo. A little adjustment can be made by clocking the hose on the turbo and the air box a little. You could try one if you like and if it doesn't fit properly, send it back.
