Hey there!! I was looking at another bulletin board ( Rodeo folks) and someone asked about performance chips for their Dodge to help with mileage and performance. Of COURSE I refered them to TDR!! But I also advised about guages and warranties, etc... . There was a poster who got quite miffed at me and said guages were NOT necessary as the chips had built in protection from engine damage... LOLOL Here is the chip this person is running and the numbers they are claiming... I pulled this right off the post. .

I have a DR Performance chip on my 2004 and a half Dodge 2500 Heavy Duty 2 Wheel drive. I get 26-30 MPG empty, 22 MPG with the 20 Exiss and 19 MPG pulling my 24' Platinum Living quarters trailer. You bet I beleive in a power chip!

Here is what the same poster said in another post:

Sir, You do not need guages on all diesel performance products, Dr. Performance's modules are programed to not allow, exaust gas temperature, (egt) to rise to a level of engine problems. They are designed simply by throttle response, and all manual transmissions can handle a module.

My question is, is anyone on here running this chip??? Are her claims true?? THanks!!

I get the feeling this person isn't in possession of a great deal of knowledge regarding these trucks. Those fuel economy numbers are a good example of my personal theory that the vast majority of people decide what fuel economy they like, then report that as fact.

It's not that they're lying about their economy - they genuinely believe they're getting that kind of mileage.

I mean, if the DR Performance stuff actually did offer up to 30 mpg, wouldn't everyone on this board be running out to buy one? There are no "secret" modules out there that only a handful of "enlightened" know about. Unlike the secret of the 100 mpg carburetor (which only a few of us in a "special" club know about).

As to whether a performance box will automatically protect your engine (obviating gauges), that might be true. But it's kind of like not wearing a seatbelt and trusting the airbag will save you in a crash.

I heard that, most people scoff when I tell them im getting 15 mpg average, but truth is IM GETTIN 15 MPG!!! P. S. Ive got gauges too, why I dont know:-laf

Thanks for the replies guys... . Yep, I can tell she was a little misinformed but as it turns out her husband runs the performance diesel shop in her area. . Hummmmmmmm... Maybe he should go on there and report back! LOLOLOL I knew she was full of it when she said that her chip would NOT affect the factory warranty in any way! LOLOLOL Oo.

I believe you. 15 is a perfectly reasonable number.

It's when you're at the gas station and the Excursion owner towing a 20' travel trailer tells you he gets 30 mpg that you have to wonder how in the world he can believe that.

I would expect most Cummins-equipped trucks to achieve somewhere between 15 and 22 mpg empty, with the median being somewhere around 17.

I get excellent mileage, hand calculated... but it's no where near 30!!! 23 is the best I have ever seen on my 06 and that was flat ground, no AC, doing about 60 because of traffic!!! I regularly get 20-21 . Roper

The people running those chips aren't informed enough to know that the overhead lies when running a chip.

Dr Performance preys on stupidity.

Calculating MPG is easy simple math. For some it is so easy they calculate it in their head. Maybe that is where the bogus MPG comes from. I keep a calculator in the console compartment and check milage at every fill up. 20 gallons for 400 miles is 20 MPG. I seldom ever see it that good. I am once again reminded of what my Dad always said. "Liars figure but figures don't lie"

Very good wisdom!!! LOLOL I UNFORTUNATELY check at every fuel up as well. Don't use calculator or my head, but do the math the old fashion way. . ON PAPER. . LOLOL THere I am sitting scribbling on the center of my steering wheel trying to remember how to do long division... two decimal places is as FAR as I go!!! LOLOLOLOLOL:-laf

Yeh, a guy in town, tows vehicles back from texas (3 car trailer), claims 28 mpg empty trailer, 34 mpg with no trailer:eek::eek: Hes got a predator downloader in a 2 wheel drive CR dually. Im thinkin s*#t I gotta get me one a dem... . or start smokin what hes smokin:-laf

I know a guy that tested Dr. Performance's theory of no gauges. He hit 1600* really quick!

I happen to own a Dr. P box at the moment..... Its for sale. Take it off my hands for $225 shipped to your door in the lower 48. (i'm sure after this thread that everyone is gonna jump on that offer!)

I had a 100 hp on a 2003 cr and had no problems with egt or boost it did give about 1 or 2 mpg better but that could just be the day or fuel quality just my 2 cents
