Weekend of Bombing!

I was looking to up the power level of my 98 12V and was thinking I would install a mild TST plate (230/605), Pyro, and 4" exhaust. Then I saw a Dr Performance advertisement saying they could add 80HP and 175 ft # of torque for $1995 without the need for a pyro or an exhaust ( due to their system not appreciably raising combustion temperatures). Granted, the plate/pyro/exhaust is less expensive, but the promise of reduced combustion temperatures sounds attractive. Are they producing what they are promising or is it simply snake oil? Does anyone have experience with the Dr P product and if so, how satisfied are you with it. What exactly do they modify?

bill , i have no clue , but for 2 large you can get a ton o horsepower. i really don't think anyone who has gotten a DR P. hop up has a clue what he does , its very hush hush , he just takes your money and tells you nothing , i have heard he can do amazing things , what exactly they are is anyones guess . but in my opinion you can't raise power without more heat , its part of the equation.

Bill with the TST plate you are talking about the (230/605). I ran for almost two years with out ever having a problem with EGT although I had gauges I never got over 1050 deg and that was with the cat in place and the exhuast stock other than no muffler. I was into the mods $300 for the TST plate, $35 for the AFC spring kit, & $50 for the muffler elimination kit. $385 beats the hell out of $1995 any day.

I believe Dr P. raises injecion pressure. I'm not absulutely sure of his practice. But if so that would mean the pump itself will be under more stress. Personnaly Cam torqu plate is the best performace you can get. Hope fully some expert out there can shed some light on this for us.

Bill,
Ask for the Dyno results of their up grades (in writing). I think that anyone should be able to back up their claims in writing.

Any time you increase HP, EGT invariably goes up. With injectors, they don't go up as much, as the pop-off pressure being increased can improve the plume distribution and efficiency.

TST offers many different plates with different advertised HP ratings. The only thing I don't like there is the lack of graphs, and the engine HP ratings.

Diesel Dynamics also has their own plate (only one) that comes with the AFC spring. They claim 50hp/125tq on a 215hp, 60hp/150tq on a 180hp, and 90hp/250tq on a 160hp. Graphs are on their website.

Also, $2k is a lot of money. Cam plates run in the under $500 category. I would suggest some more research before making your decision, so that you get the best bang for the buck.

BillF, I traded my stock pump with TST plate for a DR. P stage II kit 4 months ago. Stage II = Pump and Injectors. I was disappointed with the power gains (over the TST). Slight difference. I can tell you that it Does NOT smoke as much (the smoke never bothered me as much as the poor jerk behind me, so that's a moot point), EGT's WERE lower (about 100 degrees post turbo, you make the call for that importance), and mileage DID increase (1. 5 MPG average), my Tach shows 3200 before crapping out (before I was lucky to get 3000). Was it worth it to me? I wish I would have been a member of this forum earlier. Then, I may have been able to "tweak" my stock/TST setup to achieve the same results as Dr. P. using the knowledge of this forum's Gurus. It's no secret Dr. Performance himself is not well liked by many members of this forum because of his noted arrogance. I have never talked to him myself. I have talked to some of his "dealers" and am very pleased with their responses. Would I do it again? In hindsight I would have stuck with what I had (TST) and tweaked first (AFC, move plate around, etc) because of the $ I had already invested. If I didn't have any mods done, I would go ahead and spend the 2 grand and be done with it. But I can never be done with it because of this damn Bomb bug. Now I have 4 in exhaust, psychotty air, yadda yadda too anyways. Laying down the cards I've chosen... My 2¢ worth.

Thanks everyone; I really appreciate all the good info. I think my rationale (that is cheap) side will win out and I'll go with the plate, pyro, and as Drawson suggested 'muffler be gone' approach. Alaska Bee, I especially appreciate your shared experience with Dr P. I would expect your truck must pull hard with the Stage 2 (130Hp/300ft#) and your trans mods. What TST plate were you running? What are your max temps now?

BillF:
I have dyno tested the TST plates on the Dynojet 248C and can give you numbers if you want. I have also put in some of these plates and everyone has been happy, although some want more later (no one comes back for less power) #ad
If you want lower egt for a given power level, &/or less smoke, use bigger injectors too. No magic here. BD offers a governor spring kit that will give the extra rpm. You can do all this stuff and have a lot less in the package--how do you think a vendor can afford to build race trucks, etc.

BillF, to be honest with you, I don't know which plate I was running. I just put on the one that Mark Chappel sent me. I'm not sure there was a choice then (a couple years ago - ish). I think I still have the (empty) box of goodies sent. Now that you have my curiosity I'll see if I can find out.

Yes, my truck does pull great. My EGT's hang around 600 (post turbo) cruising down (level) highway with 10,000lb trailer, 10 psi boost at 70MPH. I have to try to get it above 950 (heading up a grade and lugging 4th gear at 55MPH). Not sure what my boost is then, my gague only goes to 30. Empty, I don't watch the EGT's much any more. Barely reaches 800 while pushing my foot through the floorboard #ad

The 4" exhaust and Psychotty air were what helped my EGT's the most, though.
