Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) A/C Killing My Truck

Well, I decided to go to the Texas Motorplex in Ennis this past friday night. Plan was to have some fun, and kick some rice burner butt. Here's where the problem arises.

Mid-way down the track on my 4th run, I managed to shell fourth and fifth gear!! Now I'm :{. But do I let two fried gears keep me from having fun?!? Heck NO! I decided to run again without fourth or fifth (shift pattern 2-3-6). Believe it or not, it actually worked. I won!

Anyway, I get home saturday morning, tear down the transmission, and find that the shift forks for the two gears were broken. I got a couple from a used transmission, and stuck 'em in. I now have a complete transmission again! Yahoo!

I know it was completely my fault and I take full responsibility, and as the saying goes, YOU GOTTA PAY TO PLAY.

Hey Kris,

Is this the same problem you had when the dealer fixed the problem the first time? Are you sure you know how to drive a manual transmission? ;)

How badly did you kick the rice burner's butts?

Charles

Wade,

Ever see a bombed 6 speed shift from 3rd to 6th under full power? All I could see was a cloud :D. No one could tell who won :--) :p

fj40charles,

Well, I thought I knew how to drive one . To answer your question, I had it rebuilt the first time because the 5th gear synchro was installed wrong from the factory. It decided to break and take out the bearings ... and input gear ... and various other parts. In all honesty, I didn't directly cause the failure... I don't think.

As far as kickin' rice burner butt, the first run of the evening, I got my a** stomped (He ran 13. 5 and I ran 17. 2). After that, it got better. The track conditions still sucked. Oh well. Maybe next time :D.

I've been running my 6spd at the track all summer, and it does NOT like drag racing! Those syncros cry as I shift, hauling all the way down the track (mid-low 15's).

If I can find a cheap enough core, I'm actually thinking of removing my 6spd and building-up a 5spd to abuse at the track, that way I can keep the original expensive 6spd put away.

I have the same expierence with fast shifts... the ol' syncro's can't catch it in time... ...

I have a NV4500 in my garage [for my Jeep] out of my wrecked rig... was thinking... ... ... ... . hummmmm... ... ...

lets see new billet larger front shaft, fully splined rear shaft and 5th grear fixed correctly. . hummmmmm. . Mike I think you might be on to something LOL The 6 sp is great for towing but VERY slow for racing

When I'm drag racing with my 6-speed I can hear the gears clash coming out and going into every gear.

Maybe the sunchronizers/transmission was'nt designed to take 400+HP and haul a 7,000 pound truck down a 1/4 mile in sub 15 sec. ranges. Speed costs money,,,, how fast do you wanna go?

So far so good,, no metal fileings in the transmission. Fluid looks clean.

Keep that soot pourin' out at the drags.

Rice Eater,

Merrick Cummings Jr

All I can add is I give my 6sp fairly hard abuse and other than a few peices of gear teeth in the bottom and now 100,000+ miles it is hard to downshift.
