Howdy all!

If you were going to get a SBC DD for drag racing, which one would you get? The SB website doesn't exactly say which one is the best for drag racing. I will never sled pull because of the 2wd, but I do pull heavy and I like to race about 3 or 4 times a yr. I figured a DD would last the longest for heavy pulling and it would let me go down the track as well. I've also looked at the HMR Street Drag which say it is made for Heavy towing and drag racing, but I was just wondering what the best SBC is for heavy towing and drag racing. It's just not as clear like on the HMR site. Oh yeah, I now have a ZF 6 sp w/ 1 3/8 shaft.

Thanks,

Clayton

Hmm...

I wouldnt go with a dual disc for drag racing.

Although "Banshee" has had good success with his Haisley street Drag DD.

My SBC is a little slow for drag racing.

I have a Haisley DD Street Puller and don't notice any slower shifting from my stock clutch when drag racing. I do notice a bit slower shifting when I am not shifting WFO.

FWIW.

I would talk to Peter, tell him what you just told us and say "I'll take it"! LOL really though I'm not sure which one of Peter's DD's I have but I can say after 1,000 miles it was no different then the stock clutch as far as pedal pressure or being able to speed shift other then it flat holds the power. I would and will continue to give Peter my bus. Good luck any way you go!

I'm with Justin on this one. I have the 3850 plate load 12 ceramic button and it DOES NOT speed shift. I don't see how its possible to drag race a DD..... I just don't!

I have the 3600 and have no problem shifting mine. Harder to shift when going slow easier when going fast. This has been true for every clutch I have driven EEP, SBC, etc. I would go with the DD. It will allow for 4th gear launches once you have the power. I am not an expert just speaking from experience. GOOD LUCK.

I've got the 4200 lb SBC DD, and near stock power levels (i. e. having to launch in second), it's not going to be near as fast as a stock clutch down the quarter. The 2-3 shift is the most difficult, but double-clutching lets it go fairly smoothly. With my 250 or so rwhp, I can launch harder in second than with the stock clutch (since I can drop the clutch from a higher rpm and not have to worry about slippage), but the slower 2-3 shift puts me back right where I would have been with the stock clutch launching a little slower.

The 3-4, 4-5, and 5-6 shifts are not too different from stock and can be made pretty quick, though (especially double-clutching), so if you've got enough power to launch in third gear, it wouldn't be too bad at all. Having a high-revving 12V that only requires one or two shifts during the quarter mile would make it even better. One of the lighter DD's would also shift faster, and I'd've gone with a lighter one if I were going to be staying below 600 hp. Give Peter a call and see what he recommends for your power level. He was a really great guy to deal with when buying mine - didn't mind all the phone calls before I decided which one I wanted. ;)

with my CON FE it will take all the 2nd gear 3k rpm 4x4 launches I can dish out, I know it wont take a hard 3rd gear launch. When I race my buddies with DD clutches they have the ability to take off in 3rd but I get them on the top end because I can shift way faster than them. We usually run about the same ET but my MPH is faster.

Its harder to get my truck going because it defuels so hard when I start to move off the line and only being able to go to 3k rpm and 4. 10's, but being able to nail the 2-3 shift can make a big diffrence. Plus the DD clutches are harder on internal parts due to the extra rotating mass.

12V Ford,

I'm still loving my Haisley Street Drag. I say it shifts as quick if not quicker than stock. The 2-3 seems the longest, but it's no slower than stock, and when racing the local automatics from a roll the 4-5 and 5-6 are allllmost automatic quick. For how I run my truck (similar to you) this clutch fits the bill perfectly. From a stop in 2nd it is butter smooth as long as you don't let the R's drop below ~1000 (will buck the truck a little if you do) and the pedal doesn't need the legs of a NFL running back to push in. I'm not sure why HMR clutches aren't more popular, but they definitely have the goods!!

I have heard good things about the Haisley DD that banshee is running. I have not run aginst anyone who has their DD clutch. All the trucks I have run have had SBC DD 3850, and 3600.

i have their 3600lb/12 CB DD and i would say its a little slower to shift. when i ordered it, i told him i towed, have about 500hp :D and occasionally drag and street race.

the 3600lb is what Peter sent me. its slower than the Con FE i had before but it slipped in the 3-4 shift too. this one doesnt...

ChrisW on here has the haisley DD and has had it for several years. you should PM him. i think he's slightly over 400hp

Also a couple of the trucks I raced aginst had some issues with their SBC DD not fully dissengaging which made it hard to get into gear.

I am over 500HP now and I have put this FE through its paces and I cant get it to slip, I am happy with it.

Wow! I sure appreciate all the replies. I think I have narrowed my choice down to either the HMR Street Drag or the SBC DD 3600 12CB. I still have about a month to decide, and then the fun begins Oo. I can't wait.

Peter will build a dual disk to your specs... and by "your specs" I mean he'll listen to what you want and get you as close as possible... he can lighten up the disks and strap the thing so it'll release quicker, etc.

I'd just give him a call...

Matty, call Peter, i got an adjustable rod that goes from the pedal to the firewall (mastercylinder). my problem was the release was real close to the carpet and i didnt like it. a call to Peter and $35 later it was fixed :D
