Competition Launch in 4-HI

Competition 6spd ETs??

Ok, You guys who have 2WD drag trucks tell me what rear end you are running. I have a NON-LS that will burn for a 1000 ft. I have a dodge LS that I can put in or I can go to some kind of air locker or other lockable rear end. Who’s using what? I need the ’01 to be street and highway usable when it’s all said and done. So what do you BAD boys suggest, and what gearing 4:11 , 3:55, ?:?? ? Oo. :D

Man, those would be some sweet highway gears..... 4:11 = 4 turns of the pinion, 11 turns of the ring gear... ... haha :p

4. 11:1 gears almost seem unnecessary with the torque we have..... less load on the engine... ... less top end.

3. 55:1 gears are great for top end and put a nice load on it down low... . helps build boost and results in more HP.

Lower (numerically) gears might further help out by puttting even more of a load and allowing for even more top end... . but there's probably a magical point of no return where you start doing more harm than good.

Don't forget..... high MPH's in the 1/4 are nice, but it's probably the E. T. 's you are after..... and for that you need loads of hook..... fat, well-heated slicks - good weight transfer and a well setup rear/front suspension combo.

Detroit lockers seem to be a stout unit... ... the Auburns are garbage..... the OEM clutch-style limited slips take a ton of abuse as well. I would never put an ARB or any other air-locker in the rear... only the front... ... having posi or limited slip 100% of the time in the rear is essential, not the same story up front.

HTH,

Matt

On edit: Check out this thread... . it seems that some prefer the 4. 10:1 gear ratio for drag racing... .

I have a 4wd but I race in 2wd - JMHO but you definately do not want 4. 10's unless you're going to be running 35"+ tires. I have 4. 10's and I'd trade them for 3. 55's in a heartbeat. Ball park the speeds that you expect to run at the traps and then calculate what rpm you'll be at in your top gear with the tires you're planning on running and that'll tell you where you want to be. My factory LSD has lived through a ton of abuse - 95,000 miles, a lot of off roading, and over 250 drag strip passes with lots of bleach box burnouts.

Thanks

Thanks for the input guys. I have a 3:55 LSD ready to run. I guess I'll load it in the 01 and see what happens. I've been talkinfg with Scottt at Mass Diesel and I think I'll upgrade the injectors to DD-IV's have the transmission upgraded w/ hardened input & output shafts and a few other drag related mods he has suggested. Some kind of traction bars and a set of slicks should get me started for the summer season. I'm open to suggestions at this point so talk to me. just remember this truck has to go to work every day 'sept Sunday. :D

Steve - good thoughts.....

You could also use some airbags to help equal out the suspension... . they're nice and easy to adjust and 'tune' at the track. Adjustable ladder bars can be a pain, but they work nice when they're setup right. Anything that could help curb axle wrap will help out.....
