Anyone near or close-by me here in Terre Haute, IN that is an expert in drilling and tapping broken bolts/holes? I could use some help. I have no tap/die kit, and only primitive drill/drill bits etc. I would just pull the cylinder head and take it to a shop and let them fix it. But I hear after pulling the head, the best thing to do would be to replace the headgasket. But my custom fire-ring headgasket runs about $137. I don't know if the fire-rings would need replaced, there's more $$.

I might have to take Michael up on his service call offer :-laf . Only I'd slap on the exhaust manifold, bolt everything back up, and then drive to his place, then remove the manifold etc. Chris, Daniel, Philip?

Did I hear Smoke Over Peru springtime edition?? :-laf :-laf

Bill let me see what is going on this weekend. I'll know by tomorrow where I'll be standing.

You have a air compressor?

Bill,

Your seriously considering pulling the head??!! I have never had a problem pulling a broken cap screw.

Perhaps yours is in a tight location???? THAT can make the job "miserabla"

Did someone say SOP in the Spring!!!!!!?????

Thanks Philip. Yes I have an air compressor.

Scott, it's not really in a tight location. I just don't have the right tools. We definately need more Smoke Over Peru, at least twice a year:D!

heat that bolt up red hot with a torch, then let it cool. This alot of times will break the rust holding it in.

Then put a nut against the end of it. Stick the mig down in there and weld it to the bolt. Very carefully work it back and forth and you might get lucky and it comes out without drilling.

If I remember correctly... . the bolt is broken off too deep in the head to weld a nut on. It has to be drilled and easy outed. A possibility is after you center punch the bolt, drill a small pilot hole . 060, then step that up to . 125 if this all looks good (centered) try a . 250 reverse cut drill bit. Often times this will grab the bolt and spin it right out. If it drills through then use the easy out.

Once it is out be sure to chase the threads real good and use plenty of hi-temp never sieze when you put it all back together.

I would not put a torch to it, unless it was the absolute last chance at getting it out. Once you heat it red hot, or weld it for that matter, then drilling it out of the question.

YOU CAN DO IT BILL!!! :)

Smoke over Peru TWICE A YEAR  . Dunno, we might give Michelle an over dose of first gen presence. :-laf

I think we should have a Smoke over Peru meeting at IRP this year. MY wife put in hotel reservations over a month ago to go out and watch. She keeps saying we need a diesel pulling truck. :( Too bad we can't afford the ones we have now. ;)

I don't know if I am going to make IRP this year. My truck might be scattered all over the place with a cab swap. Me and Jeremy pulled the bed and goose neck hitch last night. Tonight I got to clean up the frame from that welded in goose neck hitch. :(

I am waiting for a call saying my flatbed is done. Then a fast trip to KS. Then a couple of weeks later a fast trip to AL for the cab.

Bill,

I can help you out. Try hitting it with a center punch (that may not be the right term- one that has a point vs being flat), then drilling it with a small bit. Take a square cut easy out, and get it out of there. Worked on the broken caliper bolt this wknd. :-laf: Bring me a rear axle while yer headed this way, too. ;)

Daniel

Bill looks like I can make it down that way this weekend. Send me a email with a phone # so I can call and set it up.

This sounds like a 6 pack of 20oz dews to me. :)

WoooHooo!, email on the way. You name it! I was sorta thinking your truck could use a nice 16cm housing:D:D... or a big drink of #2.

I'll try to get a new pic up of how far I've progressed. I already started drilling on the bolt. I think my mistake was initially not starting the pilot hole directly in the center. This should clear up some of you others guys questions/comments.

I have an easy out set that is truely and easy out. It's from Snap-On and I luv it. They look like stubby little pipe plugs that are hammered into place and a wrench/soccet is used to turn the extractor. To release the busted piece, the extractor is turned opposite.

They are BEAUTIFUL!!
