I drilled the stock manifold using a shop vac, grease and went in with q-tips to get any leftover stuff when done. Now when I start if up it sounds like a marble is hitting the fan of the turbo during idle. I ran it for maybe 2 seconds and then another 3 - 4 seconds to confirm what I was hearing.

Q: Should I

1 - hit the go pedal in hopes to blow out the left over shaving? (don't think so)

2 - Pull the turbo down and clean out

3 - Let idle for a minute or so

4 - Pull exhaust down and try to clean from back end.

Any help would be APPRECIATED!!!!!

i think id remove the turbo and get a look at the exhaut wheel,and try to finf the"marble" before it does any more damage. Ive done well over 25 pyro installs the same way,never a problem. Im sorry to hear of your troubles :{

You should drill with the engine running and be careful when breaking thru not to have much pressure on the drill or a big chunk could drop in. I drill with an 1/8" drill first than the tap drill.

plug up the exhaust and hope that it blows everything back out that hole you drilled. i was looking at my manifold the other day and figure i will remove it when installing my pyro just b/c i would rather be on the safe side.

Thanks guys.

I'm going to pull the exhaust side down. With any luck I'll be able to see and clean the marble. If not, its one step closer to pulling the turbo down... .

:( Nothing's easy.

If you need an extra pair of hands and some moral support, let me know. Not much else to do with this weather.

Thanks for the offer Hank but I think I have it figured out. :)

Well, I've got the turbo down and you would NOT believe what it was. The very tip of the drill bit snapped off and fell into the exhaust manifold. I can't believe I didn't notice it after drilling the hole. I'm such an arse….

Anyhow, goes to show that sometimes its best to be safe then sorry. I could only imagine what would have happened if I took the easy route and just hit the accelerator.

Hank - my next project is to install the Buckstop front and rear bumpers. Maybe we could get together for a few brews over this project?

Thanks for your help guys!

Wow ..... if that is a 5/16 bit ... . no wonder it sounded like a marble. I'm letting you make all the mistakes before I drill mine. Did you drill on the vertical part of the manifold.

That's the reason why I mentioned earlier this week about not drilling these with the motor running. You just can't guarantee if the bit is going to break or not, no matter how careful you are.

Got the turbo back on and ran it. Everything back to normal... no noises this time! Oo.

The turbo blades on the exhaust side seem to be ok. But when you look down into the casing (from exhaust manifold side) you can see the scratches made by the broken drill bit. I suspect the pieces just bounced around the casing and never hit the impeller (or so I believe and hope).

Pyro Pre-Drill insurance

For the shade tree mechanic looking for a little extra insurance he won't screw up his pyro install:

I unbolted my turbo from the exhaust maniforld flange. Separated it as far as it would go (about 0. 5 ") and cut a piece of thin plastic sheeting to slide over the turbo inlet between the bolts. When I drilled, a lot of metal fell down on the plastic. I vacummed it, then deburred the inside of the hole after tapping it. Vacuumed again and bolted everything back together. A few extra steps, but I was 99. 9% sure no metal was going into my turbo.

FWIW,

Joe

Mojoe beat me to it. I didn't like the risk/consequences either, so I also unbolted and stuck a piece of cardboard betwixt. Also installed the exhaust brake at the same time. Therefore I needed the wheels and black plastic liner off anyway.
