Drilliing and Tapping Not Required

ATS manifold comes with a raised boss at the #4 cylinder location that is ready for an EGT probe. I think it is 1/8" NPT

#ad

I heard that wasn't a good location...

Of course someone will correct me if I'm wrong. :) I read that hole was for the under valved crowd. It was an attachment point for something or other. Besides I wouldn't want to know the temps of just one cylinder.

Just my 2¢ worth,

Garrett

The ATS 3-piece exhaust manifold has a raised boss at the outlet of cylinders #1 through #3 and one for #4 through #6. Personally, I used the aft boss (#4 through #6) to drill/tap my 1/8-27 NPT hole for my SPA thermocouple. Also check to make sure you have enough penetration of the thermocouple into the exhaust manifold runner, as the ATS manifold is quite a bit thicker in this raised boss area (about . 520" if memory serves) than the OE exhaust manifold is at its suggested thermocouple placement point.

I used the really tall tapped boss (metric thread), located near the valve cover to anchor down a custom billet aluminum bracket I made to support the pre-formed heater core hose (which has to be modified on the 24v engines because the OE bracket will not clear the rear joint section of the 3-piece manifold. I wonder if ATS ever changed the installation instructions to reflect this?

John, nope. Not as of about a year ago anyway. They not only need to upgrade their instructions but they need to update the product, I mean how long have the 24 valvers been out now? Nice manifold though.

Thanks for all the info guys the install was tough but it worked out fine. Only problem was the coolant hose bracket i wish they had some kind of after market bracket. The exhaust gaskets they sent me were rectangular and my ports are round so i used the old gaskets again. Thanks again .

TERMINATOR....A'LL BE BACH!

I'm glad to hear your ATS exhaust manifold installation went well. Pretty trick piece eh?

ATS Manifold

I had the same question about where to drill and tap for the pyrometer sensor. It sounds like you have already drilled the ATS so any suggestions are a moot point. I purchased my ATS manifold from Piers and his suggestion was -

"The ATS manifolds "used" to be predrilled & tapped, but haven't been for some now. They do have 2 bosses on the manifold, right beside the flange that the turbo bolts too, that were put there for this purpose. The front one is the one I usually drill and tap for the pyro, I've found the front three cyl. run hotter than the back 3 & I want to know what's the hottest egt's I'm hitting are. . "

I know what you mean about the bracket! I cut the original and drilled it to accept a flat piece of steel we bent and made to fit. This is the best picture I have at the moment. If you would like a better picture, let me know and I'll get one.

Here's a Picture

I would post some in the "Reader's Rigs," but for time and I haven't found the guidelines on who, what , where or how. Anyway, here is a recent picture. I posted one on another thread with the Lance Camper on it in the Canadian Rockies. I thought that was a good picture.

Oh, it's true about the number of posts - somewhat. I had problems with my account and the TDR tried creating a new account for me so I could post. (Had about 60 posts from early last year - March I think) One thing led to another and I ended up with a new user name (to protect the guilty). I usually don't chime in unless I see something I might be able to help with. Anyway, all I can say is the input from the TDR members has been a wealth of knowledge from pre purchase to heavy mods. I really can't thank the members enough and I hope to meet some of you at May Madness this year.

:)

24V-DSL

Stock Grill - but that's subject to change.

Here is a picture of the bracket to attach the heater tube to the ATS manifold. Just a flat piece of steel bent to match.

Rad:

What "Jet-Hot" coating is on your manifold? I recently

got mine back from them with the "2000 degree" stuff

and it sure doesn't look as good as yours!

Nice truck!
