i have a 93 D250 see signature. My truck has a audible clunk from the driveline right after the initial power is let out to the trans. It usually does this after switching from reverse to forward or vise versa. but it doesn't happen right when the power hits just right after. I pulled out the drive shaft and replaced all the u-joints and this did nothing to solve the problem. any ideas

Sounds like ring gear and pinion has bad mesh. How many miles on it??

pull the rear cover. You probably need to change grease anyway. If you have a dial indicator and a magnetic base, place the base on the housing surface that the cover bolts to and put the dial indicator on one of the teeth of the ring gear. You should have between . 004-. 009 play. If you have more than that your backlash needs adjusting. You ring and pinion might be worn. If this is hard to understand, a service manual has a very detailed diagram.

Mine did exactly the same thing. I took it to the dealer just before warranty ended and what they ended up doing is a bearing and shim kit. They said the allowable play (slop/backlash) as only 1 1/2 thousandths over max spec and that was what did the job. No problems since the re and re. What makes it sound worse they said was the hollow driveshaft amplifying the sound. MHO.

Hey cowboy, Depends on how much excess gear lash you're dealing with. Keep in mind the clunk you hear is one gear tooth building up momentum before it contacts (hits) the other one. I'm pretty sure that ring and pinion sets are only surface hardened so if it hammers its way through that . 003 to . 005 hardened surface, it'll wear faster. Don't mean to scare you but its always easier to fix little, early problems than to have to get a tow home. Hope this helps, Jones
