Any State Farm insurance users? Thinking of signing up for their DS&S plan. Don't know if I like the idea of them knowing everywhere I go though. Anyone else trying to save a few dollars on it?

I dont know what that plan is. But there is a company I think is called metromile. I think they put a transponder in your car that tells how far you drive, how many miles, how fast, etc. I would pay 10 times the price rather than give that kind of info to anyone. We have fought wars to not have that kind of totalitarianism. Although I know there are some who just dont care if it saves them a buck.

Nope. Not for me, thank you. I do not like ANYONE micromanaging my life in any way or form. I don't care how much the savings are. If I feel like a spirited moment can be released from the inner me in a safe and prudent manner, I do not want some nanny state to tell me I was not a good boy and remove the minuscule discount reward and ruin the record for something else down the road. An old philosophy some of us street rodders professed among one another: "It ain't illegal 'til you get caught". I don't wanna be caught for something that isn't illegal...;):p:D

Put a Gamin Dash cam in your vehicle. Drive it a week. Remove the SD card and watch the video. Those full and complete stops you 'quickly' made: watch as the MPH on the camera doesn't hit "0 MPH" because it's too slow to capture 0 MPH. Every time you go 1 MPH over the speed limit on the camera it's now a factor and evidence. Not some widget black box 12 people too stupid to get out of jury duty need explained to them, but, a sound byte sized video showing you 1 MPH over the speed limit. Some maps do not have updated speed limit changes in them and can make you look like you are doing 10 MPH over when you are doing the speed limit.

And you want to transmit this damming information to your insurance company to help them get out of a possible claim why again?

I dont remember if it was farmers or state farm. But one of them has a reputation that goes way back for not paying off on legitimate claims. The most recent one that I am aware of was here in seattle maybe 15 or 20 years ago (?). I guy was chasing his girl friends car trying to hit her. In the process he crashed into an old lady's car and hurt her pretty bad. The insurance company (of of the "farms") would not pay off because it was not an accident. They said it was done on purpose. Public opinion caused the insurance company to pay off. They were on the verge of losing a lot of customers in wash.

Usually the discount set up is plug in drive, they set a discount rate, apply that rate. 6mo later it increases 50% of that rate, then 6mo later goes 50% of that, and you are close or over the original.

It's all in the terms and conditions what the max discount could be and the re-increase rate and durations.

I have not see one that discounts and stays discounted very long, and most are 6mo plans not annual.

I'm all in on the ODBII gps tracker I have them on all my Van's and trucks, insurance drops to have them, but they are 3rd party not tied to insurance. It's about $179 per vehicle per year, I save about $300 per vehicle with the discounts and gps thing. I have 17 of them in total.

The overspeed is a joke as it uses google maps limits which are usually wrong, hard stops are pretty accurate, fast acceleration also pretty accurate.

Also if you have a cell phone all of these are being tracked already so don't think it's just the OBDII devices they already have your constant location speed and the sort via most phones, which have some pretty decent accelerometers now a days.

All the traffic data on maps is from phones not ODBII devices.

This is my biggest privacy complaint, not being 100% autonomous, or even close to. I have switched off tracking (chose do not track) on my cell phone, yet I still received "We noticed you stopped at (fill in location). Please let us know how your visit was at (fill in location) and submit a rating." AND, here is a map history of the past "X" days worth of travel". But...but...all settings are set requesting NO TRACKING!!!! When I made a request as to why I was receiving the messages they stopped, without a response. So...my guess is they are still tracking, just no longer requesting the feedback of places I have visited. What other data are being tracked?

You car insurance company is not electronically aware of these driving habits. As far as they know, you are a very conservative driver as long as you are not getting tickets or involved in accidents. The insurance co supplied devices know your driving habits and will raise your insurance rates. And from then on, any other insurance co that you may go to will have than information.

Yeah right now no connection they just know we have it and I have all the logs it provides on each user.

The service we use is Zubie, it is the behind the Progressive Snap Shot and I would guess State Farm and some others while they don't share the driver specific data because we don't supply the names and DL #'s they do share the actual data across the platform and sell it to others for use. It's pretty open market for the data from these devices.

The State Farm stuff I just read also can use the Ford Sync and GM On Start data, they claim for mileage but it has everything else... That's was showing a 5% discount for that integration.

Also I read there was a monthly fee after the 1yr mark so you wind up paying them to monitor yourself at some point, that all has to be subtracted from the eventual total discount.

Here is a basic report they send.

Last time I was in Utah... It was an 80 MPH speed limit on the freeway. Not speed of traffic, but, the posted limit. Don't know if the experimental limit stuck there or not.

Blanket 75+ OMG! MPH on the report state specific? :p

Actually had to look that up:

Portions of the Idaho, Montana, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming road networks have 80 mph (129 km/h) posted limits. The highest posted speed limit in the country is 85 mph (137 km/h) and can be found only on the Texas State Highway 130.

Work has “GeoTab” reporting to a tracking room. It’s all internal to the agency as the agency is self insured.
It’s gotten to the point where we can’t veer off a specific route or stop for any reason. (no lunch or coffee stops enroute) and if I just move a vehicle 10 feet- one spot to another, the belt has to be buckled. If not, an email is generated and sent. Complaints can be written, they’re telling us eventually there could be payroll penalties. This goes for speed limits, vehicle attitude, all other traffic laws.

Go ahead- let them plug into your own car.

Our State Farm agent said he could give us a discount IF!!!! WE PUT THE DEVICE in our cars. Been with S F from 1976 house, every car & when I had my own Rig IT WAS INSURED WITH SF, I've NEVER A CLAIM OR TICKET and IF I PUT SOME KIND OF CHICKEN "S" DEVICE IN MY CAR THEN!!!! YOU'LL SEE FIT TO GIVE ME A DISCOUNT????

WE ARE NO LONGER with State Farm

On my Android phone, every afternoon at approx 4:00, there is a Google maps popup that tells me that my drive home is normal speed or delayed. This morning, I got a banner that said traffic to my church was slower than normal. We are already being watched out there. I'm not sure why google needs to track my drive to Church weekly, but apparently that is important.

Yup...been with them since at least 1968, except for three years in in the mid 70's while stationed in Germany when we had Zurich ($$$). We were treated very well by our agents around the country and were very pleased when we filed any claims. However, in the past several years they have changed the way they do business and it is almost impossible to just drop in and have a bit of one-on-one face time with the agent to ask pertinent questions. It used to be easy and informative. Now you have to talk to the front desk person, who most of the time can't tell what time it is or what day of the week it is. Then you have to wait a week or so for them to discuss the issue with the agent before they (not the agent) gets back with you...with the wrong answer. I am tempted to go over to USAA...just waiting for the other foot to get stomped on. My loyalty cup has been spilled too much these past few years...not much left. Although most other insurance companies cannot beat the premiums I get. If they do beat the premiums, it's so miniscule and missing some small, but most important features.
