drive shaft damper

How important is the vibration damper on the drive shaft at the transfer case? the one on my dads truck is starting to get a little loose, dose it need to be replaced or can it be removed and thrown away?

Anyway you need to balance the shaft afterwards.
Just throw away won't work.

It is a harmonic damper so you should just be able to remove it. Being loose on the yoke is not good. Would not hurt to rebalance the DS either.

Can you get just a new damper or must you but the whole front slip yoke?

I don't think the yoke and damper is serviced separately, you have to get the whole DS. In that case the 1 piece DS is probably the easiest to source.

However, the stock damper was patch to stop the harmonics in the DS, both steel and funky OE aluminum one.You do not NEED the damper if you have the correct DS.
