Buddy of mine has a 99' quad cab, long bed, 4x4, 6 speed. Engine has around 500hp. For some reason the carrier bearing on his split drive shaft keeps going out. He can hardly get one week out of a bearing. :{

He took the shaft out and had it checked for ballance and straightness. All checked good. He even had the output shaft on the transfer case checked and the bearings replaced. But it just gets worse.

Anyone have a clue what is wrong with his truck? :confused:

Details on "going out"? Isolater pops out of housing? Vibration when he takes off? If it is vibration when he takes off he has lifted it and not adjusted the driveline angle. Some stockers will do it too. Spacing the carrier down some will fix it. Try about 1/2 inch at a time. Some stacked washers will work at first but once the correct height is determined get some square steel tube and make a solid spacer.

Has your friend checked to make sure the shaft will expand and contract without binding? I had trouble with my carrier tearing out the rubber. It turned out that the shaft splines were sticking badly. I cleaned up the splines with a file and haven't had trouble since. Good luck with it,

andy

His truck has NO lift kit,... . Not even a leveling kit. He also had all new universal joints put in. The splines also move freely. Problem is... . the carrier bearing is actually coming completely apart. When he is taking off, it will make alot of racket, but once he gets up to speed, it won't make hardly any noise.

Can you put to much torque on the driveshaft and make the carrier bearing come apart? Is there a bigger or heavy duty bearing available for them? :confused:

My 97 extra cab longbed with leveling kit with close to 500 hp and tows 10,000 lbs everyday :-laf puked the mid-bearing too :{ purchased a new one from Dodge and was a rip-off, it lasted two weeks. Purchased another that lasted less than a month. I called Brad at Santa Rosa Driveline in Santa Rosa, CA and explained the problem and he suggested to eliminate the mid-bearing and built a one-piece driveline and never had a problem since. :)

I have run the factory carrier bearings for more than 100k now. Just had my rear shaft cut down to accept the 5600 trans and now have an afermarket carrier from http://northernvirginiasupply.com/

The guys name that builds the shafts there is Mike. He is at the Springfield store.

I make 494 HP, run 37 in rubber on a 4. 5 inch lift and tow up to 20000 lbs with my truck. My two piece shaft has a little vibe at take off because I need to space it down about 3/4 of an inch.

The factory carrier has survived on my 95 Cummins LWB 5 spd 4wd since it was new. It now has 70000.
