I have one of those neat point-and-shoot laser guided IR temp guns (Raytek). Today after a 50 mile drive home I shot some of the drivetrain and this is what I found. Outside air temp mid 70s.

Front axle 91 F

Rear axle 112F

Transfer case 109F

Transmission NV4500 with Fast Coolers 132 F

Cummins oil pan 165 F.

Pretty neat tool. Not very expensive. Available on EBAY

and some local auto parts stores like NAPA.

Neat! You can check the balance of your cylinders too by aiming at each exhaust port. Kinda tough to do going down the road though :)

Also I use it when towing, to check tire temperatures, brake temperatures to see if a trailer brake is dragging (hot) or not working at all (cool). Also the trailer wheel bearings.

Point it at the AC vents to see how well your airconditioner is working too. Lots of neat uses.

Here is one

on Ebay.

And a bunch more on Ebay.
