I have been chasing the same problem on my '97. I have had the whole transmission rebuilt with the new main shaft and it still does the same thing. If you find out what it is let me know

If it isn't a universal I would suggest it may be the back lash in the rear end. That is where my noise as you described is coming from.

Driveshaft Noise

Sounds to me like the sliding yoke on the driveshaft is dry and getting stuck. If you have a problem with the rear end most times it will howl.

Neil:)

Mine does the same thing. There are new u-joints in the whole rear shaft and the spline section is good. I believe it is play in the rear diff, and the sound is amplified through the hollow driveshaft.

I notice it most going into 3rd and 4th gears for whatever reason. I just try to do it extra smoothly. :)

How many miles?

Hey Drives Mopar!

You didn't mention how many miles you have on your truck.

The reason I bring this up is that I had suspected that my rear axle was getting 'sloppy' and just had it rebuilt while out west & doing the NVG install. The rear axle backlash spec is a max of . 009 (9 thou) using a dial indicator on the ring... Mine was showning . 030. :( It's a quick check but you have to pull the cover.

Dan at Quad 4X4 stated that the Dana 70 really need to be 're-bearinged' about every 150,000 to maintain the proper backlash. He said he rebuilds as many Dana 70's as he has done NVG conversions when a customer thinks the Getrag is on it's way out. I need both (rear axle rebuild & NVG) while I was there & was given an awesome price & service for the Dana rebuild.

One other thought... If your universals are good you might want to check the mid-ship bearing on the driveshaft (ext. cab, correct). Sometime universals are difficult to tell their condition by just twisting things by hand... If in doubt (& many miles), change them before spending money elsewhere.

I hope this helps...

KEENO :)

here is what i did

i already replaced the center support w/ some

special aftermkt unit , ithink its the backlash

thats the cost to do dana 70 i did notice ltd slip

slips more than it grips , at 150k miles

I had identical issues a few months back (around 100Km). The Chrysler dealer checked the rear diff. and found the backlash around 11. 5 thou.

They put in a bearing and shim kit returning it to 8 thou. //// no more noise. It seems the backlash sound is amplified through the hollow drive shaft making it deceiving as to its origin.

Anyway, mine is fixed now. :)

Ps. have you checked to make sure Spot the dog isn't in the wrong place ? ;)

rear-end rebuild

My 92 W250 extended cab had same symptons with one added twist- sometimes when the truck went over a sharp bump a growl would start similiar to a front wheel bearing spinning the race on the hub. In fact I thought it was the front and replaced all the bearings but I saw no evidence of a spinning race.

A few months later the rear-end began to clunk around corners-drained oil and added new anti-slip additive. Clunking got worse. Inspected rear-end and found spider gear cross-shaft ( may be wrong terminology) sheared in half. Had rear unit rebuilt to tune of $1300. Bearings were worn beyond tolerances and gears were also. Everything in rear-end was replaced.

End result? [good pun] No more clunks, growls or noises of any kind- front or rear. I assumed that the rear-end was going to be the least of the trucks' potential problems but I was shocked at how much it had destroyed itself!

Hope your problems are cheaper to fix but it certainly sounds familiar. Good luck.

i think when i get $$ ill have it checked

i too think its rear end , i bet it will need

backlash and bearing done and ltd slip too

i need to get it ready for the pulls

next sept 2002 here in placerville ca
