Driver sied rattle under dash driving me and my dealer crazy!

I thought just maybe someone else out here has had this same problem. I'm getting a rattle under driver side dash that almost sounds like an electrical connecter banging on something. Will be more prominent at times. More noticleable at slower speeds . Dealer has had it for 2 days now and still can't find it. I did notice a rattle on engine shutdown, but the dealer says that's a different rattle! My dealer and me sure would appreciate any tips!

One thought, your brake controller(assuming you have one) plugs in under that area or the dash. Is the connector or associated brake controller wires making the noise? Might be worth checking.

I also have an intermittent rattle in that area, but I don't trust the dealer to explore my dash. I figure they will blame it on my gauge and/or controller wires anyway!

Dealer found rattle! Located in inner fender underneath hood. lubed and adjusted. All fixed---no other squeaks or anything. I was worried about them butchering up my dash---but everything is ok.

Try lubricating the small (1 1/4" dia. x 3" long) coil spring on the steering shaft against the firewall in the engine compartment. use white lithium grease every other oil change. Our 98. 5' and 01' both chirp if it gets dry.

Ghostroller is right. I found out how to stop it when changing the fuel filter and spilled some #2 on the steering shaft. I had a chirping/squeak when cornering on my 98.

My truck is 1996 model and makes a noise to what you are describing. I got as far as I could get in taking the dash off, but could only get so far with that because I do not have a manual. Anyway I can grab the spring on the steering shaft that comes right out of the fire wall and move it around and the noise will go away. The noise stays gone longer in the summer time than in the winter. Where about in the inner fender welldid the dealer locate the noise? Glad they were able to find the noise. I have been to two different dealerships with no luck.

I will call the dealer sometime today to see where in the fender well area they found it. I've been off camping for the last few days and haven't been around. The truck pulled great though and that rattle seems gone!
