OK Guys, 2 weeks after sucessful ball joint surgery the driver's Front axle seal started leaking (I musta sneezed sliding the shaft out). I has not healed in 500 miles of patient watching. I understand the process: cover off differential, spindles undone, axle nuts off, axles out (again). From your experience, will I need a spreader to coax the differential carrier out of the axle housing (96,000 miles)? Dieselpowerman hints this is the easier side?? but this step has me worried. The right shaft leaked right away and I changed that sucessfully—found that instead of pulling the seal into the axle tube I rigged a seal driver and a cabinetmaker's clamp to gently push it from the opposite side of the shift motor box. Any advise or personal experience on this would be appreciated—including the (gulp) obvious just send it off the the stealer!:(

Seal leak

I'm no help.

I just noticed today that my drivers side seal is also leaking. I wish that Joe Donnelly, the leader of the desert rattlers, would have a get together, like the guys do up north and help change out my seal.

It looks like a big job. I only have 122,000 on my 99 4X4.

Pete:(

Good news is that the basic dealer charge for a front axle seal replacement is $175, well worth it in my book. It is a fairly common procedure since the problem plagues gassers as well.
