I am swapping my NV4500 for a 5600. I know the rear driveshaft will need to be shortened. Should I just do away with the carrier bearing, or should I just shorten the section from the transmission to the bearing.

Thanks

The outfit you're getting the swap stuff from should be able to answer that question. e. g Blumenthal, Driveline Specialist (NV), et al. I think you keep the bearing but don't know for sure.

The way I understand from my drive-shaft shop is that you'll need to keep the carrier, the shaft would be too long, and too tough to balance.

The factory NV5600 used a one-piece driveshaft (no carrier bearing) with a Quad cab short bed. Not sure about the long bed, but the wheelbase is 15. 9" longer. If you want to reuse what you have, you will have to keep the bearing and shorten it. That may be the least expensive option. Otherwise a whole new driveshaft is in order - stock or custom made.

What Rob said, its my understanding that it only needs to be shortened like an 1" or so, and I believe some didn't even do that they had enough room to just slide it back. One piece will be to long it will require less torque to twist the shaft up.

Needs to be shortened 5-6" on a long bed. You need to measure the exact length when you get the new gearbox in. The driveshaft shop will be able to tell you the exact points to take measurements from. While you're at it you could have them bead blast and paint the driveshaft for not much more $$.
