Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Lift Pump Confusion

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel leak need advice.

98. 5 diesel, Auto trans, 158 K miles. 70 HP Edge chip, no previous drivetrain work since new. I just had the injector pump, lift pump and fuel filter replaced due to intermittent PO66 trouble code. Transmission was drained and screen changed one year ago. Bands and linkage were good to go.

Now the problem. When excelerating, or if holding a steady throttle, at 1500 - 1600 rpm, I get a howling noise. It only does it at that rpm. Also there is a bump noise when driving on rough roads, like a ball joint is loose, but I had the upper joints replaced 10 K miles ago.

The strange thing is, I just detected the howl since the injector pump was replaced, less than 500 miles ago. I have a hearing loss, and I took an independent service man on a short ride with me yesterday and he says he thinks it is coming from the center, to rear of the truck.

The truck is going into his shop tomorrow, but I would like some help from you experienced 2 gen users on this issue. I would like to find a specialist on Rams, but I live in a small rural town, and that is not likely here.

TIA

sounds like mine did. I had a howl come on at 40 MPH then go away as I accelerated. I cant find the work order, as I remember the dealer replaced

the differential ring and side bearings.

Here is what the manual says.

Gear noise usually happens at a specific speed range. The range is 30 to 40 mph, or above 50 mph.

When road testing, accelerate the vehicle to the speed range where the noise is greatest. Shift out of gear and coast through the peak noise range. If the noise stops or changes greatly:

Check for insufficient lubricant

Incorrect ring gear backlash

Gear damage

Goose... . I have the same bump thing going on and i have been looking for the issue for 6 months... . When you figure it out let me know!

Problem solved. Oo. Replaced three U-joints with heavy duty, greasable U-joints solved the howling at 1500 RPM. Why Dodge isn't using greasable joints is beyond me. #@$%!

Thanks for the replies.
