Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) driving downhill with auto trans in low

On very steep mountain backroads (forest service gravel roads etc. )where it is necessary to keep speed under 10 mph is it okay to crawl down (empty truck, no towing) in low so that I don't have to ride the brakes all the way for miles (1-6 miles)? transmission holds speed down and no sign of overheating but just wondering if I should burn brakes or if it is safe for auto trans? It's a 2002 so should be the 47RH or RE, I need to check exactly what version it is.

Mabrown, you should have a 47re.

I do a lot of back road in the mountains and when needed I use low gear on the down grade. .

As long as you're not overheating I don't see why it would be a problem.

the kewl thing about when in low gear 4x4 no need for brakes or fuel pedal, it creeps in and out with no problem, mine has 103,700 miles now and still same transmission and it still does it, you gotta love that Cummins engine... . I mean thats like comparing apples to oranges :-laf
