Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Drone noise

When my 4" exhaust was installed I had them install a small (very small) muffler in the stock position. Now I don't mind the loud cab noise but the wife and kids did complain on the last trip pulling my 5ver on some long grades. I read some threads on this awhile ago. Does moving the muffler closer toward the front of the truck help reduce the cab drone? I do not plan on putting the stock junk back on so if moving the muffler won't help I guess she has to go... :-laf
