i have 1995 2500 automatic. when i turn usually from a dead stop. i makes a low pitch noise sound like its from the front. low engine rpm is when it does it. doesn't do it any other time. any help would be great

Thanks

1st thing I would try is get a turkey baster and a quart of Valvoline synthetic power steering fluid. Suck out old fluid with baster and add the new. Start engine and turn wheel a few times. Then do it again to get more old fluid out of pwr steering system. The fluid in there is probably OLD. This fixes alot of problems with the power steering and is quick and cheap. If this doesn't help look at the belt.

I am a firm believer in do the simple stuff first before doing any parts swapping.

ya i thought i was that but i wanted to get an idea before i wasted time on it. my belt does probably need to be replaced though thanks for the help

Belt noise should not be different when turning as the power assist is gear driven through the vacuum pump. However if it puts a load on the engine a bit it may change the rpm slightly to make a belt noise??? My guess would be the syn pwr ster fluid change it's cheap, quick and will eliminate the possibility of it being steering related if nothing changes.

i plan on changing the ps fluid tomorrow but i dont have a lsd.

AH! OK - I've seen that same effect with the LSD clutches - probably more often than with the PS - but I did drain/refill my PS with the synthetic stuff too... :D

Do the synthetic thing for the PS pump. You'll be amazed at the difference, especially in cold weather. No more wierd noise from the pump when cold.

i did change the power steering fluid but napa didn't have synthetic so i will change it again. i think it fixed the noise isn't all the time now just sometimes. also why is synthetic so much better? Thanks

My dad and I both changed to synthetic at the same time. Both pumps started to leak. I changed mine back to regular fluid and the leak went away. My dad pulled out of the garage one morning to find the fluid running out like a faucet. Put a new pump in and went back to regular fluid and no problems. Just our experience.

I've been running syn power fluid going on 4 years now, no leak problems as previously mentioned. I changed to syn shortly after I purchased used with 75k. I change using syringe getting as much out as I can and refill with fresh every spring.
