Drops out of Gear

On my 07. 5/6. 7 with the 68R trans. it drops out of gear when desending a hill and I use the brake slightly, it goes to neutral if the RPM's get down to 1800 and does not reengage unless I hitthe throttle or let the speed pick up about 10mph. Any suggestions? 07. 5 3500 quadlong bed, SRW. Thanks Eric

Make sure you have the latest flashes and drive it in tow/haul mode. Tow /haul keeps it in gear longer.

How do you know the transmission shifts into neutral? Does engine speed drop to idle rpm on the tach? Can you feel the torque converter disengage then engage again when you gently apply throttle?

If so, your's will be the first problem with the new MOPAR automatic I've seen reported on TDR website.

The RPM drops to about 1000, not 750 and seems to just be coasting, it is in Tow/haul mode. It seems that the torgue may be engaged but the trans is free wheeling, in hitting the throttle it has to come up to about 2000 to reengage.

I don't understand the situation you are describing. What differential gears does your truck have? Is the exhaust brake feature enabled? Is it in Tow/Haul mode or normal mode?

Is it "dropping out of gear" somewhere around 20 mph? All of them disengage and freewheel around 25 to 20 mph depending on axle ratio. Mine, with 4. 10 gears, downshifts and holds the gears with exhaust brake closed down to 20 mph or perhaps 19 mph then freewheels.

Maybe that is what yours is doing. If your truck has 3. 73 or 3. 42 gears freewheeling will occur at higher road speeds.

I will be surprised if your truck actually has a problem but it is possible.

Do you have a friend who owns a 2007. 5 ISB6. 7 or newer truck w/automatic who could drive your truck and offer an opinion whether yours is doing something different?

Could it simply be the torque converter unlocking and reducing the engine braking effect and making it seem like its freewheeling in comparison to what it feels like when converter is locked and the E-brake is on?



I can't offer any help with experience because I have a manual trans and when I drive my wifes Jeep with an auto the damn thing feels likes running away compared to the truck when I take my foot off the throttle.

Yes, the drivetrain "freewheels" or coasts when the ECM or PCM unlocks the torque converter at approximately 20 mph but I don't know what speed the original poster is asking about. If the coast situation he is describing occurs at higher speeds I have no idea what his truck is doing.

You could probably pull up some of my old posts, but to put it short the reverse clutches and the OD clutches were burnt up. All kinds of debri in the pan. Put my truck out for a week.
