I am in need of rear brake drums. Are these still availiable aftermarket parts stores? Are they all made the same, or are there certain/particular brands to stay away from? TIA
Most of the better parts stores still list our drums. There are 2 different models of drums. One has the mounting face of the drum flush with the edge. These are used mostly on SWR model trucks. Then the dually uses a drum that has the mounting face offset from the the edge of the drum about 2" to 3".
Do yourself a favor and replace all the small parts inside the drum. Hold downs and self adjuster hardware.
I also have a new drum turned lightly to make sure it is round. Most are not round straight out of the box. The last drums I did on a dually needed . 030" to cleanup one drum. The other took . 020" to cleanup.
My 3/4T drums looked identical to the DRW drums- I even put 3" shoes in them, only the hub didnt extend as far past the flange as did the dually. I think the flat faced drums are for the light duty 3/4tons.
Drums should be available at all the major parts stores. Unless you have one of the 2x4 89 trucks you will almost certainly have the heavier drums that have a step in them. They are the EXACT same drum the duallys use so don't let them order you the wrong ones. If the application guide doesn't work they will need to look it up by rear end for 69-93 6500 lb unit.
