Prefiltering WVO

We've been making Bio for about 4 months using the DSE process and cannot get it to work right. Sometimes we plug 6 filters for one 47 gallon batch and sometimes we can go a couple batches on a set of filters. We have been only been getting our WVO consistently from one resturant, a chinese buffet. After about one month, our 55 gallon drum we had at the resturant was almost half full of sediment. This sounds bad, but from what we have seen, this is normal. So, instead of reinventing the wheel, what are you all (ya'll for the southern readers) doing? We pre-filter the oil with some sort of cloth filter which does a pretty good job, mix the ingredients in, and then it is pumped through 2 omni filters (a 20 micron and 5 micron) and then through a goldernrod fuel filter. This is all pumed into or fuel tank, which has a goldenrod water separator before it is pumped into our trucks. Do you think it is our oil or our system? Any help is greatly appreciated.

dse problems

hello

I think your problems are with your filtering of the oil

I use a 200 micron drum filter then heat the oil to 250 degs to rid it of water then hold that temp for 6 hrs then let it cool to 100 degs this is all done in a 55 gallon drum transfer the oil from 6 inches from the bottom of the drum thru a bag filter 5 micron to the mixing unit thats where i add the gas/kero/power service/ dse additive then I filter thru the same bag filter for up to 24 hrs i will not use any thing not filtered for at least 12 hs

then I run the fuel thru a waterblock filter the goldenrod filters do not work that good. then when transferring to the tank I run the fuel thru the filter and then thru two more water block filters is set up has run for 6 months and it works very good.

I can set you up the same unit and it will work great.

also I can get all the parts /filters if you want to build your own.

thanks for your time

I think cj's on to it... too much hard fat is making into your filter system. If you can settle it a bit first and then run it through something in the 200-400 micron range you keep much of the "sludge" out of your filtering system.

I let mine settle and pass the 'clear' stuff through a 400 micron mesh - which traps much of the fat-solids.

I take the milky semi-solid stuff and consolidate it to let it settle so that I can progressively use the clear stuff off the top that appears after a few weeks of sitting (in the current summer temps). Eventually I'll end up with a bucket of nothing but solids that I can use for weed-killer, dust settler, or whatever.

That should extend the life of your filters a lot - I'm getting multiple 55 gallon batches out of a single 5-micron whole house water filter cartridge ($2. 44 ea) in this manner. When they plug, it is usually because I got sloppy with that milky stuff, and the grainy-white fat solids create this coating over the filter cartridge that pretty much shuts 'er down.

Good luck!

Thanks guys, we were thinking about throwing in the towel on the process, but we'll try your advice. I sent you an email CJ.

Using the DSE process is not really making Biodiesel is it?

No, it is blending.

Others use a twin tank, heated oil system to accomplish essentially the same thing... reduce the viscosity of the oil so that it will work well with the stock fuel system.

Biodiesel is a product of a chemical conversion of the oil to (typically) methyl ester and glycerin - using lye as a catalyst and methanol as part of the reaction.

Three different approaches. All can work, and each have their advantages and disadvantages.
